the Pumpkin Patch by Jim lves With only just under a month to go until the 5th Annual Prince Edward County Pumpkinfest, Bill Greer and 1 decided that we had better go out on "Pumpkin Patrol" In spite of the drought, it appears that many growers are having success in growing Giant Pumpkins. We visited the pumpkin patches of John Dempster and Robin Snooks, Dan Insley, Terry Cooper, Robert Rutter, Elmer (the Scarecrow) Daley, Arnold Vader, Paul Greer and sons, Bill Greer and myself. Pumpkins ranged from 100 bs. right up to over 800 Ibs, according to the measurement chart, and most pumpkins are still putting on the pounds. I understand that there are also some nice pumpkins in the Belleville and Foxboro areas. My brother Paul even has a couple of good ones way up in Bancroft. He is planning to bring them down to Wellington, as long as they don't get trashed by a bear, as they did 2 years ago. The Grower's Association held a meeting on Sept. 6th and lined up some help for the weigh-in and is looking into building a boom for the iift truck, to assist in picking up these giant pumpkins and squash. We have 37 paid up members and will be selling memberships at the weigh-in. On Sept. 7th the Pumpkinfest Committee met in + Wellington and have started lining up help and getting events ready for the big day. They still need lots of volunteers to assist them, so don't be shy and get involved. Call Lou at 399 2000. This year, Pumpkinfest will be on Saturday, October 13th starting with a pancake breakfast and then the parade will start on the Belleville Road at 10:30 AM. All pumpkin contestants are asked to participate by parading their pumpkins and decorating their wagons, trucks and trailers. This parade just seems to get better "each year. We encourage everyone to participate in the parade with costumes, bicycles, old cars, horses and anything else that will move or can be pushed. There will be prizes for parade floats and the best "Living Scarecrow". In addition to prizes for the pumpkins, squash and tallest sunflower, Chairperson Lou Pierson informs us that there will also be prizes for the pumpkin carving contest, (children must be supervised by their parents) games and contests and a new competition which will be for the best floral display in a pumpkin. This will be judged in the park. There will also be live entertainment, craft tables, fish fry, food vendors and children's games and contests. Pumpkinfest hats, T-shirts and sweaters will also be on sale. So let's "Keep up the Tradition" and make this year's parade better than ever by participating and bringing out all your friends to this premier fall event. ; 2 pine doors - 1 3/4" thick - 50" x 90 1/27 : Insulated chimney - 10" square - approximately 8' long 1 200 galion oii tank - in good condition Sid Drury - 476-4152 The Milford Community Friendship Circle's Harvest Tea Crafts & Quilts 7 CE y Cir?
