The Torah Parrot Three sons left home, went out on their own and prospered. Getting back together, they discussed the gifts they were able to give their eiderly mother. The first said, "I built a big house for our mother." The second said, "I sent her a Mercedes with a driver." The third smiled and said, "I've got you both beat. You remember how momma enjoyed reading from the Torah? And you know she can't see very well. So I sent her a remarkable parrot that recites the entire Torah. It took elders in the congregation 12 years to teach him. He's one of a kind. Mama just has to name the chapter and verse, and the parrot recites it." Soon thereafter, Mom sent out her letters of thanks: "David," she wrote one son, "The house you built is huge. I live in only one room, but I have to clean the whole house." "Saul," she wrote to another, "I am too old to travel. 1 stay most of the time at home, so I rarely use the Mercedes. And the driver is so rude!" "Dearest Irwin," she wrote to her third son, "You have the good sense to know what your mother likes. The chicken was delicious." Heart & Stroke Drive Completed I would like to thank the residents of South Marysburgh for their generosity in the recent Heart and Stroke Foundation drive. Thanks also for the support of all of the volunteer canvassers who helped in the collection of a total of $1,836.00. Bruce Scott, Team Captain Cincfest Picton presents "You Can Count on Me' Mon April 9, at theRegent Theatre, 8pm. Cinefest is pleased to be able to bring this film to town, since it's such an exception to the general rule of American filmmaking. It's modest in it's ambitions and low key in tone, and leaves you feeling that it's delivered more than it promised. This is a far better bargain than most movies make with their audiences. The movie tells the story of a brother and sister who built a bond after having been orphaned at an early age, and how that bond is strained by the changes they've gone through in their adult lives. It stars Laura Linney (who was nominated for an Oscar for her role), Mark Ruffalo, and Matthew Brodrick. American playwright Kenneth Lonergan, who wrote and directed the film, also got an Oscar nomination for his screenplay for the movie. The Cinefest committee gives this film a strong recommendation, and hopes to see you there. The film has a US 'R' rating, and probably isn't suitable for or of interest to children. Running time is 111 min. Cinefest Picton thanks its local sponsors, whose continued support makes this program possible: Mr Larry's Video , Books on the Bay, The Waring House, Travellers' Tales Bookstore, County Sunshine, and Green Gables Giftshop.
