Cinefest Picton Jan-Feb 2001 Presentations: Alternate Mondays, at the Regent, 8pm Jan 15: Dancer in the Dark 'This is the latest film by the Danish director Lars van Trier, and features Bjork, Catherine DeNeuve, and David Morse in the lead roles. Bjork plays Selma, a factory worker whose bleak life is lightened only by her love of musicals, and her ability to immerse herself into them to the point of escape. van Trier is well known for several things: as the director of Breaking the Waves, as an author of the Dogma 95 manifesto, and as a film- maker ready to take any chance he can to shake up what he considers the mostly soporific conventions of con- ventional filmmaking. Rating: AA, 139 min. "Jan 29: Waudowntown Almost everybody who was at this year's Toronto Inter- national Film Festival either praised this film or heard the praise from others. (It won the Best Canadian feature award.) It's the 3rd feature by director Gary Burns, and takes place in a network of shops, offices, apartments, and interconnecting passageways in downtown Calgary. The film focuses on a bit of time in the course of a bet by 4 young men to see who can go for the longest time without going outside. This is our depths of Winter cheer me up special, starring Don McKellar and Fab- rizio Filippo. Rating : AA, 83 min. Feb 12: Two Family House Yet another try at a Winter cheer me up, this one the au- dience favorite from the 2000 Sundance Festival. We're in the 50's, on Staten Island, and watching the story of Buddy Visalo: Italian American, young, and ambitious. He's always wanted to be a singer, but never really taken his shot at the big time. He thinks he'll try to make his own luck by investing in a two family house, where his family can live upstairs and he can open a club downstairs-featuring he himself as the star act. It's a story, so of course he gets more than he bargained for, and it's from Sundance, so of course his big shot amounts to his chance to be more than he was trying for. Starring Michael Rispoli (from The Sopranos) and Kelly MacDonald. Rating:AA, 104 min.
