RE Re Who's Crazy? - Continued from page § smoke, triangulated it, and determined it was exactly in the spot of the third tower. Frantic calls on the radio fi- nally woke the guy up and after a moment of silence he shrieked, "Good Grief! I can't get down! The meadows afire! Help!" He'd thrown a cigarette out the tower win- dow, it had landed in the cleared space below the tower, and set the dry grass ablaze. You wonder why some people are classed as unemployable? Lonely men in the woods, be they fire tower ob- servers, trappers, or gold seekers are a strange bunch. I met a man while timber cruising in the Peace River country in Alberta who lived in an abai.. d lumber camp, thirty miles from the nearest road. He lived on cases of condensed milk and sardines which he packed in on his horse. His horse survived on the grass growing in the disused logging roads. He wore heavy military surplus woollen clothing, no underwear, and mosquitoes would land on him, fill up with a good blood meal, then drop off entirely satiated. Didn't bother him at all, though my skin would crawl with sympathy pains. When I first made his acquaintance, he had just changed rooms with his horse. The horse's room was cleaner. No kidding. I better die before Diane, or I have a feeling I'l become crazed like the old guys in the woods. Only I'll be very cautious. ~- George Underhill NEES For a new look, = fora 'complimentary' skin care = consultation, for the right colours for : your skin tone, for any occasion from ; every day to wedding day Call Rathngne Waller The Crowning Touch Certified Beauty Consultant : Tel: 476-2032 / Fax: 476-9111 473 Kelly Road, Cherry Valley : e: km.walker@sympatico.ca By Jim Ives Pumpkinfest 2000 is quickly approaching and most pumpkins have virtually stopped growing. Keeping the pumpkin on the vine is quite important, as it will start to loose weight as soon as it is cut off, When frost threat- ens, cover the fruit with old blankets or sleeping bags and you can even spread out plastic drop sheets over the vines to keep them alive. Fungus is the worst enemy at this time of year and any good fungicide such as captan or sulfur powder can be put on the stems and any crack or blemish that is not dry. Pierson's IGA window in Wellington will display infor- mation on all the different contests that you can enter and will also give you a schedule of events for Pumpkin- fest. The parade will start at 10:30 AM sharp but we suggest that you line up between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM on Belleville Street on Saturday, October 14th. We have heard that some of the floats are already under construc- tion. Please put a sign on the driver's side of your vehi- cle or float for the benefit of the judges and to let the pa- rade watchers know who you are and where you are from. Memberships are $10.00 per year and may be purchased at the weigh-off site when you enter your pumpkins, There is no fee for entering the tallest sunflower contest and membership is not required. (Prize is $25.00) Well that's all for now from the Pumpkin Patch... see vou there.
