The South Marysbu LIBRARY NOTES A Little Help From Our Friends... Is anyone interested in helping to form a Friends of the Library group? Several people have expressed an interest in creating a group like this in the community, and the contribu- tions of the Friends may well allow the library to do more with less. The activities of the Friends can follow the interests and inclinations of the members of the group. For instance, some Friends may decide to raise funds to buy something special for the children's section, while others may form work parties to do some painting or other major projects. Friends can coordinate special events for the kids, create reading programmes for shut-ins, or even help with the shelving once in a while. The possibilities are endless, and every Friend can do as much or as little as they please. If you are interested in being a Friend, or would like more information, please contact Cheryl Reed at 476- 8038. Basement Bargains Now that you've emptied your attic and basement in the name of Spring cleaning, you may be wondering what to do with all those old trea- sures. Why not recycle them at the Ann Farwell Public Library Yard Sale? On Saturday, July 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the library will be holding its annual Yard Sale to raise funds for ongoing projects. If you have something to donate, pick-up and storage are available. Now that your attic and basement are empty, you may want to fill them up again with other people's treasures, so be sure rgh Mirror to drop by and check out all the bargains. For more information, call Carmen King at 476-3739 or the library at 476-4130 on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. Summer Reading "If your idea of an ideal summer afternoon involves a gentle breeze, a tall glass of ice-cold lemonade, and the kind of book that really takes you away, you're in luck. From summer camp to the summer cottage, from the seaside to the circus, from fabourite fishing spots to best-loved ball parks, Favourite Summer Stories from Front Porch Al (Alan Maitland), this collection is a perfect companion for a sum- mer's day." A Proper Garden by Elisabeth Sheldon is a book for those who face extremes of heat and cold yet yearn to grow the cottage gardens and formal mixed borders of our fellow gardeners in the mild British Isles. If you're in the mood for a fascinat- ing mystery, pick up The Man In The Ice, by Konrad Spindler, a carefully documented scientific account about the discovery of a 5,000 year-old body. Follow this true account of how this Neolithic hunter reveals to a team of scien- tists the secrets of the Stone Age. What Goes Around Comes Around Recently Bob Beardsley wandered into the library holding a book. Nothing unusual there, except that the book was one he had borrowed from Ann Farwell herself over twenty years ago.It seems that Mr. Beardsley had a young family to entertain, and with no radio or television, the winter nights could get pretty long. Ann Farwell lent him a copy of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare and the book was well-loved. Mr. Beardsley said he wanted to return the book with many thanks, and offered to have it rebound so that others could enjoy it too. The book is now on display at the library, complete with the original inscription in the flyleaf that says Ann M. Farwell, 1929.
