February, 1996 VOLUME X , Number 2 Published for nd about Township people and vents Winter Carnival Success in Spite Of Weather South Marysburgh sure knows how to celebrate winter... and winter helped us out by throwing at us every kind of weather that winter can produce. But we had our carnival with its pancake breakfast, bed races, free hot dogs and hot chocolate, movies in the afternoon and bingo in the evening. There were horse drawn wagon rides for the stalwart souls who were willing to brave a bone chilling wind and in general a lot of fun. The bed races went on as scheduled although with a somewhat diminished list of contestants. The Men's race was won by the South Marysburgh Volunteer Fire Fighters, the Women's by the Fraser entry and the Childrens' Race by the Fraser bed powered by Megan and Randy Guernsey, Brent Moore and Greg Walker, with Wesley Rorabeck as rider, The draw for the cordless phone was held at the Bingo at the Town Hall and won Cathy Scott. The Bingo was a huge success, with the hali filled to capacity with both children and adults. Just the right kind of evening of family fun to end a day long celebration of winter. A special thanks to Gordon Handley who again did a super job of soliciting donations and fund raising for the carnival. Now you want to know what became of the Fireworks? No they didn't blow away in the wind. No they weren't returned to the dealer. Yes! Yes! They ARE going to have the Fireworks but the date is not set. The best I can tell you is that they will be set off in February and that there is an evening of Bingo planned to follow. Watch the Gazette and the County Guide for a date and time. Before leaving the South Marysburgh Winter Carnival two things have to be said. The Vol who organized, set up, worked at and gave unteers many hours of their time deserve our thanks by the bucket full. There are those who probably are saying that the carnival should have been cancelled and held another day, but with ali the effort that had gone into it and all the scheduling of their time that the volunteers did to have it on Saturday, if would be unrealistic to ask them to do it all again for another date. Two sets of volunteers would almost be needed to schedule a "weather" date and since it is hard enough to find volunteers for the regular date if you didn't work on it, don't criticise it. The second thought is, it would do well for the organizers of other winter carnivals to use some consideration and some commons sense and get together to discuss future dates of events such as this. It is far better to have something going on every week- end rather than raining on each other's event by scheduling on the same day. South Marysburgh has had its Winter Carnival on the last Saturday of January for 8 years and the last time I checked there were at least four week-ends in January. Picton could have picked any one of the other three and had just as successful an event as they did by using the same 1d as South Marysburgh's and they wouldn't have come out of it looking like inconsiderate bullies. And we would have all been able to join in and enjoy each other's event. Come on Picton, sharpen up. 1 WECK-C - Bev Walker inside this Issue... @® Circle Notes 3 @ January Thaw 4 ® Druella Acantha Malvina 7 2 - --- The Barbershop
