The South Marysburgh Mirror Book lovers should make a note of the date, Saturday, November 18th, on their calendars. That evening authors Terry Griggs and Shyam Selvaduri will read at the Picton Town Hall at 8:00 p.m. Mr. Selvadurai is the author of "Funny Boy", the story of a boy growing up within an extended upper- middle-class Tamil family in Colombo, Sri Lanka, during the seven years leading up to the 1983 riots. This brilliant literary debut was nominated for the 1994 Giller Prize and was winner of the W.H.Smith/Books In Canada First Novel Award. "The Lusty Man," Terry Griggs' first novel, is a slowly unfolding comic extravaganza of life in an island community. For a time he succeeded in convincing the governments of Great Britain and France that each new addition of territory fully satisfied his aims. Thus, he reoccupied the Rhineland in 1936, annexed Austria in 1938 and seized the Sudetenland (a German speaking area of Czechoslovakia) the same year. ~ The political leaders of France and Great Britain sought to halt the German march but still militarily weak from WW I, resisted only in words. Hitler violated the Munich pact (by which he had been given Sudetenland) by marching into Czechoslovakia early in 1939. Finally the British and French took a firm stand, and with Germany's invasion of Poland Sept. 1, 1939, they declared war on Germany. World War II had begun!
