2 Happy St. Patrick's Day Of Ponds and Pucks and Ponderamas How many of you noticed the number of young people playing out on the Mill Pond; skating to and fro, sticks in hand, on the cleaned off patch of ice? Almost every eve- ning and certainly every Saturday and Sunday, at least one youngster and generally five or six, could be seen out there skating, no matter how cold. There are some who say, "In my day we cleared the ice... didn't have any fancy tractor tome we had a large enough patch of ice to skate on we were exhausted, soaking wet with sweat under our many layers of warm clothes and still had a mile or more to walk home, carrying our shovels. By the time we returned, the wind had covered it all in again, and we had to start over. It was the rare day that we managed to clear the ice and have energy or daylight, left over to skate on it. In my day, those same people who grumble about clearing the ice for the kids to skate on, also shovelled their own driveways. One comment that one can't help but agree with, is that the people who use the hockey nets, could show their appreciation for having the ice cleared and the nets provided, by bringing them in to shore at the end of each day. Each time there is a thaw, someone has to go out and rescue them, and this could be a risk to the person retriev- ing the nets, whereas if the folks using them brought them in to shore, It would be safer for everyone. Speaking of young people, it is good to see that South Marysburgh is building for their future. The new library is one of the greatest assets that a community can have as it holds the literature and information that interprets our society and that of others. As time passes, it will include some very sophisticated information systems, but its most important assets will continue to be the books on the shelves, for they are completely portable, need only a light source to be accessed and can entertain, inform, transport and amuse. When you support the Ponderama on April 17th, you are not only having fun, you are ensuring that this facility remains as a resource to this community and to its future, South Marysburgh council is showing its support for the library by budgeting monies over and above the library grant given for the maintenance of libraries by the province, This township has traditionally shown support for services and organizations that benefit all the community. This support is actually a saving to the taxpayers, as the pur- chase of library services for the residents of the township, from the library in Picton, would cost more and be less accessible than our own library. The same applies to our sister township, Athol, from whom the library receives the mandatory library grant, but that shares equally, the use of this library. It can not be said too often, that South Marysburgh is a great place to live and to raise a family. And to all the Irish in our township, HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY! 1 » Shantymen's Concert 2 » Pond, Pucks & Ponderama 3 » Advice Column 4 » Marysburgh Memories 5 » Mt.
