PAGE 4 THE ACTON MONTHLY VOLUME |, ISSUE 7 EDITORIAL « With Scott Brooks This year marks some significant milestones in terms of Acton’s industrious past, particularly relating to tanning and the Beardmore Tannery. It is to note that it’s been 181 years since tanning was brought to Acton, 37 years in September that the tannery ceased operations, and 25 years this month (May 19th) since the former plant burned down. As a local historian, through my on-going work of Vintage Acton, I am quite honoured and privileged to be able to mark these historical milestones, and more importantly, record and preserve this history for future generations. More times than not, stories and personal accounts are often taken “to the grave”, so to speak, and are unfortunately forever lost. This year, it is my mission to record and preserve such events and stories through spoken word in the form of an audio documentary. So far, as part of this undertaking, I have spoken with a couple of individuals who happily shared their memories of the Beardmore Tannery but I am encouraging others to share their stories as well, to help further preserve the history of an industry that gave Acton’s namesake of ‘Leathertown’. If you or someone you know has memories to share, then feel free reach out to me as I am eager ‘0 hear from you—the more voices the better! Iam planning to release the audio documentary later this year, and, in the meantime, I hope to hear from you to help record and preserve the history of the tannery, through the power of spoken word before it is lost to the hands of time. A sure sign that spring has arrived, and an indication that summer is just around the corner, is the smell of hot dogs cooking on the grill!
