Legion News With David Maloney, PRO Royal Canadian Legion Branch 197, Acton Our oldest Member, Sytska Drijber just turned 103 and Peggy was there to help celebrate her Birthday. Sytska was recently interviewed by Zach Dunn, a young man travelling across Ontario interviewing WW2 veterans. Check him out on YouTube, and hear about Sytska’s husband Oscar's escape from Colditz. The late Oscar Drijber taught school in Acton. Zach also interviewed another one of our WW2 veterans, Stan Bowen. A sixty-year member of Branch 197. Feb 25th two teams played District Senior darts in Waterdown the team of Wayne Amirault and Edward Ebbinge won doubles and will be representing Br. 197 at Provincials on April 1, 2023, in Port Credit. The Ladies Auxiliary hosted Zone Darts on Feb 4th and entered 3 teams. The A team won first place and the other two teams will join them in the next round to be played in April. The Ladies will host this event next year. The Winter Family Day Festival on Sunday Feb 19th was a huge success with more than 150 kids and parents enjoying indoor and outdoor fun and games. Lots of teenagers and young people were there to provide fun for the kids with face painting, mini golf, chocolate bingo and lots of other games. The St. Johns ambulance volunteers brought along their service dogs (much to the delight of the younger kids) and the fire service volunteers brought a Fire Engine for the youngsters to enjoy. Thanks Angie, Les, Ian, and Laura. You provided a wonderful day for the families. We also collected another 83lbs of food, $123.00 for the Acton Foodshare Bank, so it was a Win - Win day for the community. There will be a Chicken Souvlaki Swiss chalet dinner on Friday March 24th followed by a trivia night. This monthly event is becoming increasingly popular, so why not join in. On Friday, March 17th we will be hosting a St. Pats Dinner and Dance. Irish Stew is the dinner of course and the entertainment will be provided by the Puslinch ‘House of Blues band’.
