(ont sath af Speer) IBLETTER TO THE EDITOR PROVINCE HAS MUCH WORK TO DO TO PROTECT ENVIRONMENT To the editor: Thisis inresponse to MPP Ste- phen Crawford's July 13 column titled, "Historic commitment to protecting our environment.” Crawford boasted about his government's commitment to en- vironmental protection. In my opinion, nothing could be further from the truth. With extreme weather trends throughout the world, the gov- ernment should be urgently looking at strategies to reduce greenhouse-gas (GHG) emis- sions. We need to protect our nat- ural areas and expand invest- ent in renewable energy. I don't believe the Ontario government is doing this. Instead, the provincial gov- ernment has broken its promise not to touch the Greenbelt so that developers can build sprawling Municipalities have already set aside enoug! within their borders to ar well over 17 Bacon Wrapped Beef Top Sirloin Steaks ASTEAKS x 142 9/5 oz Fae) ALL PRICES IN EFFECT two million homes, far surpass- ing the 1.5 million housing units the premier wants built by 2031. The Greenbelt land grab is un-* ‘ane “Kepsny | seaveg eliayeo | 2 necessary and, in my opinion, © : will lead to increased GHG emis- sions. The Ontario government also wants to build a highway that pave over 2,000 acres of farmland, cut across 85 waterwa’ ve nearly 400 acres of protected Greenbelt land. What responsible government decides to build homes on farm- yur food security is threatened by droughts in the US. and Canat Until Doug eed starts talking about the urgent need for climate action and cancels his destructive Greenbelt and urban sprawl poli- cies, this Ontario government will, to me, be remembered for its his- toric lack of commitment to envi- ronmental protection.
