[The South Marysburgh Mirror 17] Geekie - Cont. from page 9 could swim, in spite of the long skirts of the day. Iimagine when she realized they had all gone under that she headed for the nearest shore, which was said to be the south shore of the bay, an undeveloped, forested area then that one day would become the shoreline of Wil-O-Lea. It’s said she had one child under her arm, but she realized when she landed that the child was dead and she hid from the authorities for a couple of days and needed care after that at the Kingston hospital. Seven children died that day, one girl survived, as well as Mrs. Pierce. Local folk used to say that that area was haunted. Des Marcille explained to me years ago that there is likely phosphorus under the bark of some of the trees so that they occa- sionally glowed at night. In the 1990's, we had tenants of a psy- chic nature who asked me one day if there had been a tragedy on the bay. While they were sitting by the shore that afternoon, several souls had appeared to them, being, as my tenants de- scribed it, caught in limbo because of the nature of their sudden deaths so long ago, and our tenants helped them ‘to cross over’. Susanne Pasternak mentions the Smiths Bay drownings in one of her folk operas about The County. Since it’s history, a lot of what I’ve related may be rural legend/myth. We don’t know the real details. When my thoughts came back to computer class, it was time for lunch. I wonder what important info! I might have missed. Afternoon class was just as inspiring and enlightening. In retirement, if you can't find a free class you want to take, you can at least get a senior's discount if you choose to go to college. You do feel inspired after class, I must admit, but I haven't quite given up Free Cell yet and I have a long way to go before being a professional computer geek. Karen I. Smith R.C.G.
