Turbines. Sixty miles away - 96 km? Maybe less as the Crow flies, but then will there be any Crows left to fly on the south shore? There goes the look of ‘The Cape Cod of Canada’ if the turbines come here. There goes the beautiful PEC and you’re left with the squeaky, bird-killing turbines of PEC for awhile, then the rusting turbine-covered PEC and millions of $$$ of municipal funds to have them removed because the big-oil-company-backed turbine companies have ‘gone bankrupt’. Looking on the positive side of the negative, we could start a dead-bird festival whereby we go down to Pt. Trav- erse to pick up and count dead and injured birds. Who makes money from this fiasco? You? Probably not! Council? I don’t think so unless they put a special wind-turbine-tax of $500.00/yr., or more, on every unit. Can Council do that? Ask them. They’re the ones who’ll have to pay to fix the roads. Does the tourist industry benefit? The County will have lost its birding festival which draws so many tourists. Big loss of money there. Do the oil companies and turbine companies make mon- ey? Definitely. The farming industry? A few farm- ers, not many. Property values may plummet. Asa matter of fact, several people even now have told me that they’re considering the selling of their homes. The real estate industry may benefit - tempo- rarily. Water tables may change, as a town hall meet- ing pointed out to us. Who pays to have an enclosed cistem put on your property, and have water deliv- ered regularly? You. If they create health problems for you, who pays? You! Ifthe turbines drive you crazy, can you be held responsible for your ac- tions? Maybe the GEA has a built-in codicil about that, as well. Turbines are just another corporate way to make money for some investors at our expense. A German town had a Canadian solar panel company come and install solar roof panels on ever house. They didn’t call a turbine company. Get your own solar panels, Canadian-made, as soon as you can and. set of ofr the grid is my advice. claims we desp 1 more elena Does anyone remember recently that Hydro had to pay N.Y. state to take excess hy- dro? That expense of theirs will trickle down to us, you know. A Bloomfield Town Hall meeting dis- closed that we pay 3 cents/k for hydro yet contracts were signed, originally, with owners of industrial pan- els for 80+ cents/k. Subsequent contracts promise owners 50+ cents/k. Does this add up? Doesn’t Hy- dro have a cost accountant working for them? If we buy it from Hydro at 3 cents/k, and they pay 50+ cents/k to produce it, guess what? Your hydro has to go up, too, doesn’t it? Imagine paying 6 cents/k - that’s only twice what your bill is now, not 16 times as buying it at 50 cents is. Hydro bills 16 times high- er? Yikes! Remember a recent Rick Mercer show where he’s inside a new tunnel Hydro’s building un- der the Niagara River? Do you still think we need wind turbines because we don’t have enough electrici- ty? Idon’t! And certainly not beside a bird sanctuary along the migratory pathway of this beautiful county. The South Shore Conservancy is trying to stop turbines from being erected in this area ... www.southshoreconservancy.kos.net. Field Natural- ists are against turbines there, as well. Please give your help, too, if you can. Write letters. Karen I. Smith BLR of the DQM (Bird Loving Retiree of the Don Quixote Movement)
