[10 |, The South Marysburgh Mirror] My Amaryllis Anyone who has seen an amaryllis flower emerge has got to marvel at this wonder of nature. I received one for Christmas. In the box was a flower pot, a compact cube of pot- ting soil and the amaryllis bulb. All you had to do to start this miracle was put the potting soil in the pot, pour water over it to make it expand and place the bulb halfway down in this mixture It requires a warm temperature, the stalk to be turned regularly as it gravitates to the light, regular water- ing and like magic the blooms will appear. And what blossoms they are. The stalk grows very rapidly to about 2 feet tall. Simultaneously the bud swells, opens up and usually four large but delicate flowers emerge to gratify our visual req- uisite. This particular one is a gorgeous blush colour that would make any young maiden envious After a few days the petals shrank and drooped like an old lady's face so I cut the stalk and removed the faded blooms. But I got double the pleasure as a second stalk went through the same procedure as the first one. 0 here I am, sitting here enjoying my amaryllis all over again and attempting to pass my pleasure on to you. - Alice Miller Municipally Yours - Continued from page 4 laugh, her land takeover with those beautiful gardens and “the tale of the two trees.” She could have just “worked” at the Milford Post Office, but instead she jumped in to be a citizen when she was here. It was quite a while before I realized that she drove every day from Belleville. I wondered out loud to her why she didn’t go for something closer to home - but I sensed she really liked us - and the dominion she had over “her corner of Milford.” She will be missed ... In fact, a number of people have al- ready come forward and suggested that we honour her memory in a tangible way. Accordingly, at its annual general meeting on Sunday night, South Bay United Church offered to put itself forward as a central point for anyone who wishes to donate to a Sherry McPeak fund. The fund, and the names of all who wish to be known, will be forwarded to Russell with sincere condolences as an expression of our community’s support.
