Orok, Owen street, Barre. He was in his 87th year, being born July 2, 1882. He received his early education at the Midhurst public school, advancing from there to the Burrie Col- loginte Institute where he took a four years' course. After spending one year as teacher in Bardazay, Turkey, he returned to resume his studies at Queen's University, Kingston, receiving the degrees of BA, MD, CM, in 1914. His first year of medical work was spent in partnership with his brother, Dr. R. D. Orok of Le Pas, Manitoba, Following this he spent fifteen months us resident physician in the Winnipeg General Hospital. | "In: December, 1917, owing to a deep- |sested affliction he was forced to undergo |u critical operation on his spinal column, the effect of this forcing him to give up his medical work. J. Gilks Very sudden was the call of Death to W. J. Gilks, who was found dead in his car near Fern- dale on Thursday of last week, November 28. He had been ail- ing for some time with heart trouble Mr. Gilks was born in War- wickshire, England, in 1862, the son of Henry John Gilks. In {887 the family came: lo Canada and settled in Toronto, where he resided till 1904, when he came tu Barrie. For sume years he was proprietor of the Vespra Hotel and later went to Allan- \dale » run the Raslroad Hotel. About 1{ years ago, owing to ill health, he rented this hotel and had not been actively engaged in business since that time. His wife, who was Miss Emily Kate Savage before her marriage, survives with one daughter, Mrs. Hill of Brantford, There is also one rother, Henry Gilks of Oregon, Mich., and one sister, Mrs. Widdowson of Twyford, England, The funeral was held on Sun- day. Dec, {. from his late resi- dence, 12, Tiffin Street, and was are of the Orangemen. B. Taylor was the officiat- ergyman. Interment was - in the Union Cometery Death of Mrs. Samuel Blakely Mrs, Samuel Blakely died in | Webb, Sask., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wm. H. Ross on Nov. 21, affer a severe illness lasting sinee the middle of last August Mrs. Blakely lived in Barrie many years where she was well known. She was a member of the 'Central Methodist church while she resided here and a de- voted Christian. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Geo. W. Martyn of Empress, Alta., and Mrs. Ross Her body was brought to Bar- rie and laid to rest beside that of her husband in the Union Cemetery. Another Graduate of R. V. H. Dies Barrie friends were very sorry to learn of the death of Mrs. E. R. Birchard, who, as Miss Edna Lee, was graduated from the Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie, in 19144. Mrs. Birchard hd gone to Moose Jaw to assist in nursing, there being a serious outbreak of influenza in that city. On Nov. 22 her mother received word that she was ill, flowed next day by another message announcing her death. Shortly after the second telegram came a_ cable from Major Birchard, hushand of deceased stating that he expected to he home to spend Christmas with her. Donnelly An old resident of Vespra passed away Jon Wednesday, Nov. 27, inthe person, of Robert James Donnelly of the Eighth Line.
