League standings become uncer- tain as cancellation reports flow from miserable July weather. Third-place G.W. Woodworking Blue Jays, operating in the dry spots, have played ten games. Both George and Dragon Angels and Kinsmen Club Expos, working muddier schedules, have four games in hand: enough to propel Expos to third place or Angels to second. Kinsmen Club Expos ~ Rained out sierra: £ Confusion reigned at GFFL Sunday games By COLIN GIBSON Confusion reigned for the initial game in the Georgetown Mens Flag Football League at Neilsons Field last Sunday as a scheduling glitch saw four teams show up to do battle in the 8:45 a.m. contest. It could have been due to the fact the day dawned sunny and dry - something of a minor miracle in this otherwise wet and blustery summer of our discontent. After the schedule was straight- ened out, the games went off with- out a hitch, highlighted by the Longhorns advancing four points ahead of the pack in the race for the regular season title on the heels of a lacklustre 27-3 triumph over Plus Welding. Meznic Electric fell off the pace when handed a 30-15 loss to the Dawgs while M&M received a bit of a scare before pulling out a 28- 24 win over New Kids on the Block. DAWGS 30 - MEZNIC 15 Dawgs quarterback John Egan made full use of the wider-than- normal Neilsons field and the usu- ally tight Meznic defense suffered far too many breakdowns in cover- age in this battle for second place. Dawgs wideouts were wide open on a number of occasions, while interior crossing patterns appeared to confuse the Meznic defenders. Dawgs had 14 points on the board early in the game and led comfortably 22-7 at the half. The defending league champions hit the scoresheet first in the second half and from that point, it was just a question of playing out the string. Linus Stasiulis carried the brunt of the offensive load for the DAWGS, scoring two touchdowns and collecting a two-point convert. Wayne Stasiulis snagged a touchdown pass and a two-point convert, while Dave Clements had the other Dawgs major. Al Pelland grabbed a two-point convert while Dan Reynolds con- tributed at interception. For Meznic, Gary Lockwood had a touchdown and a two-point con- vert with Howie Hulme also scor- ing a major. Jeff Lockwood kicked a convert for the losers, with broth- er Bob Lockwood snaring an inter- ception. M&M 28 - New Kids 24 M&M may have won the battle but, in effect, lost the war, as first- string quarterback Horace Thomas was helped off the field late in the second half with what was suspect- ed to be either a dislocated shoul- der or a fractured collarbone. For M&M to have any playoff aspirations, Thomas will have to rejoin the fold. Although New Kids on the Block are a first year entry into the league, they are an exciting team to watch on offense and show promise of bigger and better things ahead as the regular season winds down. The more experienced M&M squad cruised in front, 21-12 at the More action from the Georgetown Mens Softball League Tournament Sunday. The local teams faced off at the Georgetown Fairgrounds. half, then and the New Kids defense quite literally leaped into the breach with a pair of dazzling interception returns for touchdowns on two consecutive M&M offen- sive forays. Stew Teetzel latched on to the first errant pass and galloped roughly 80 yards for the score, while trevor Elinsky took a page from his teammate’s play book and dashed the length of the field for his major off the interception. Teetzel had counted his team’ s first touchdown early in the game, with Adam Hilts sounding out the New Kids scorin; It was while attempting to catch Elinsky that Thomas injured his shoulder. Roger Thomas scored the game’s ‘final touchdown, with Richard Garden kicking the convert, to allow M&M to eke out the win. Thomas also collected an intercep- tion on an attempted New Kids pitchout. For M&M, Carlos Periera, Stew Hirst and Dan McCarthy scored the other majors, while Horace Thomas kicked a convert and Mike Hurley added a two- point convert. LONGHORNS 27-PLUS WELDING 3 The good news for the Longhorns was the two points for the win which gave them a four- a bulge atop the league stand- nthe bad news was the ‘Horns fashioned the win in a very unim- pressive style. Winning ugly, it “might be termed. Plus Welding again had prob- lems getting any consistency out of their offence and for the most parts the Longhorns seemed content to let the Welders dictate the pace of the game. Longhorns were in front, 13-0 before Daryl Weir made things slightly more respectably by hoof- ing a field goal. Longhorns scored two more touchdowns in the second half - with nary a reply from Plus Welding - to wrap up the comfort- able win. Rob Rivers scored two touch- downs for the ‘Horns with Jim Lindsay and Bob McCandless also adding majors. Dave Patterson was Successful on three convert attempts to round out the game scoring. oO APPLE AutoGlass 354 Guelph St., Unit 27, Georgetown, Ont.
