Tina said last week she’s both excited and looking forward to her 10-day trip which began Tuesday when she joined a busload of other Canadian students partici- pating in the United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth. The bus, which started its trip in Manitoba, left the Georgetown Odd Fellows and Rebekah Hall Tuesday morning with 18 students on board. Tina is the only Georgetown partic- ipant in the trip. The bus will continue across Ontario, picking up additional rid- ers until there are 42 students head- ed for the UN. The expenses for the students’ trip will be covered by Oddfellow or Rebekah Lodges in communities across Canada. In Tina’s case, the Verdun Rebekah Lodge of Georgetown will pay the expenses. Jean King, a member of the Verdun Lodge, said the UN pil- grimage has been going on for more than 40 years. The local Rebekahs sponsored students for the trip about 20 years ago but then discontinued their involvement. Last year, Mrs. King, as chair- man of the UN Pilgrimage for Youth of Ontario for Rebekahs and Oddfellows, reinstated the project in Georgetown. Richard Cook of Georgetown won the UN trip last summer. This year, local participants were asked to write an essay entitled, “What the UN means to Me.” Later, they were required to pre- sent their essay as a speech in front of three judges. Tina was named this year’s winner in April. Asked by Halton Hills This Week how she won the trip, Tina said, “I just put into my own words the thoughts I have about the UN and its main reasons for recognition in the world.” Tina added that she has never been on an extended trip to the United States before; she has only gone on short shopping trips. She fully expects to learn a lot on the tour, which will take her and the other students to several cities before arriving at the UN site in New York. Stop-overs along the way will be made at: Binghamton, N.Y.; Gettysburg, Pa.; Washington, D.C.; Wilmington, Delaware and Philadelphia, Pa. The stay in New York City will last for five days, with Tina sched- uled to come home on July 17. HALTON HILLS THIS WEEK 873-2254 In Today's Issue of os HIS WEEN ~ LOOK FOR flyers from ge Sit EXPRES.
