VOL. 21 NO, 36 NOVEMBER 1, 1978 25¢ PER COPY NUCLEAR WASTE COMMITTEE MEETS Citizen's Committee Studying Nuclear Waste, a group of con= cerned citizens met Tuesday, October 22nd to listen to Graham Saunders and Laurel Solomon, representatives of the Citizen's Commi ttee studying nuclear waste. Following a talk and slide presentation in the basement of St. Andrew's Church in Schreiber, the pointed questions focus- ed on the health problems of the whole nuclear industry. Transportation of nuclear waste, to a future disposal site was another topic which people at the meeting discussed. [t was pointed out that the C,P.R. Sub-divisions, Schreiber-Thunder Bay and Schreiber-White River have both had twelve derail- ments each in the last five years. Nuclear waste leakage will also be one of the many problemsjors. for future generations to deal with. It was admitted that Canada has nuclear waste which must be dealt with but stressed that there is no guarantee that a good solution will be found. In response to citizens questions of what they can do, it was suggested that an election issue may be made out of a problem of this magnitude. - The Citizen's Committee was formed in Thunder Bay, January 1978 in response to news that North Western Ontario was being considered for all the disposal of nuclear waste in Canada. Present were Reeve C. Brassard, Councillors K. MacLeod, M. : Hamilton,.G. Ramsay and P. Romanuk; Clerk Co-ordinator W. Hanley and M. Simmer. Previous to the meeting, Reverend John Laari approached Council with an inquiry about purchasing two lots in the Terrace Heights Subdivision for the purpose of building a church. Coun- cil informed Reverend Laari that it will. make inquiries and act on the matter as soon as possible. Minutes of the previous meeting were adopted as presented. A recommendation by Wardrop and Associates to purchase a King KV193 unicom radio from Kitchener Aero at a cost of $1,150. U.S. currency for the new airport was passed. Wardrop and Associates have confirmed the tender of Stephen Zysco for the new airport and have advised that a $2,200. re- duction in costs will be forthcoming. Also, sewer repair work for the new subdivision has been awarded to Stephen Zysco. Council moved to support Manitouwadge in an effort to oppose Bill 80 which removes the power of local boards to pay expenses to a member of council who has been appointed to serve as a mem ber of .the local board. Council accepted with regret the resignation of Constable James Chisholm from the Terrace Bay Police Department. Chief William Zroback will advertise for a new constable. The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police Zone Meeting will be held on November 17th.
