PAGE % SEPTEMBER 7, 1978 The Ontario Mobile Eye Care Unit operated by The Canadian National Institute for the Blind returns for its fourth season of providing specialist eye care service to TERRACE BAY AND SCHREIBER from September 25th to September 29th. To date, over 27,000 people have received this service. Dr. D. Whiteman, an opthalmologist who has volunteered ttime from his office proctice in Trenton, will be giving complete eye examinations to detect eye disease or condi- tion which-could lead to blindness. "Those patients discovered to have a problem such as cataracts, glaucoma or strabismus will be referred through their family doctor to an eye specialist of their choice for treatment and continuing care," said Mrs. Char- lene Cameron, CNIB co-ordinator of this Prevention of Blindness Program. ; "Many eye diseases can be treated and sight saved through early diagnosis. People often do not realize that cataracts can be removed by a simple operation and vision restored." Mrs. Cameron said that glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness which develops from a breakdown in the circula- tion system of the eye, can easily be detected and con- trolled. "Strabismus, popularly known as a turned or crossed eye, is not outgrown. It should be treated before a child reaches the age of 6 or 7 if the sight in the affected eye is to be saved. This may include patching, glasses or in some cases surgery." The services of the Mobile Eye Care Unit are available to anyone in the community, regardless of age, who is experiencing visual difficulties and is not al- ready under treatment by an eye specialist. An appoint- ment for an eye examination can be made by calling 825-3834 between 9:00 - 12 noon. (During the week of September 25th to 29th call 825-3554) This Prevention of Blindness Program is sponsored in Terrace Bay, by the Kinsmen Clubs of Terrace Bay and Schreiber, and is operated by the CNIB, Prevention of Blindness and Eye Service Department with the assistance of the Section of Ophthalmology, OMA.
