PAGE 8 TERRACE BAY NEWS AUGUST 16, 1978 HALONEN REUNION The "Prayer Committee" of the Halonen family must. have been most fervent when their weekend family reunion was blessed with perfect weather. : The sixty five who attended were lodged in trailers and tents at Rossport Park, on Lake Superior. Lauri Halonen, the founder of the family, came to Schreiber in 1907 from Finland, and returned there in 1910 to marry Maria Alexandra Sirkka, who followed her husband to Canada a year later. Settling in Schreiber They raised a family of three boys and three girls; Taimi (Mrs. H.V, Gibson of Thunder Bay, John, of Lake Worth Florida, Saima (Mrs. Ernest Willoughby of Schreiber) Peter, of Mount Pell¥ier, Quebec, Lena (Mrs. Edwin Holmes of Schreiber) and Lauri, of Thunder Bay. Their families came to attend from Ottawa, Toronto, Wisconsin, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Dungan,B,C, and Thunder Bay and Huntsville. The Festivities began at the camp ground when the flags of Canada and Finland were raised, against the colour -ful background of trees hung with gaily-coloured ballons. Glen Willoughby conducted a treasure hunt and games for the children, followed by picnic supper, and songs around the camp fire, accompanied by guitarists Glen and Dale Willoughby, Ricky and Terry Halonen. Michael Reid provided sail boat scenic rides around the island in Rossport Harbour, and Ed Holmes, motor boat trips. On Sunday, Open House was held in the afternoon in the Schreiber Town Hall where there was an impressive display of the talent inherent and developed by every member of the large family and, also by the ones they married. There were paintings, needlecraft of various sorts, carving, photography, collections of local rocks, handsomely polished and mounted, striking polished driftwood and tree stumps are but a few, with all age groups represented. An interesting slide film was presented by Rick Halonen, audio visual manager CANTRAKOW centre of Mont Ste Marie, Quebec. The afternoon was followed by a banquet when Dale Willoughby as M.C. introduced the head table guests-the older generation and their mates, reading many letters and telegrams from relatives in Nova Scotia, the U.S.A. and Finland. Then a programme was enjoyed with the Gibson twins, Nicolet and Rhoda, in Raggedy Ann and Andy costumes, giving lively exhibitions of jazz and tap dancing and Glen Willoughby presenting some acts of magic. Peter Halonen showed interesting slides of former family gatherings, notable the celebration of Grandfather Halonen's 80th birthday and some cleverly executed life sculptures Peter had done on clay bank behind his home. A picture of a sailboat b Peter was won in a draw by his nephew Glen. Twelve prints of works of the famous Finnish artist, Pekka Halonen - a cousin, of Grandpa Halonen, were won in lucky draws. The reunion was a year in the planning, and many tritutes were paid to Edith and Gayle Willoughby of Thun- der Bay who acted as a liason for the various committees. LEGION FIELD DAY: > The events at the Royal Canadian's Br. 109 Legion Field Day began with the children's costume parade. The judges, Barbara 0'Brien, Louise Irving and Dorothea Doughty of Wind- sor, had a difficult time in making decisions. Prizes were awarded to Fancy, Comic and Original with $5.00, $3.00 and $2.00 in each group. The winners ir Fancy were Lorisa Redins, andesite Annette Gauthier and Tara Tiller; Comic - Tim Glad, Jacqueline 3 Glad and Christopher 0'Leary; Original - Shannon Riley, Alana Harper and Brian Doig. There were also special prizes award- ed to Kelly Wilson for best decorated pram, Nicole Gauthier for best decorated bike and to three clowns and a Mexican girl. The parade was followed with races, with eighteen entrants five and under each being given 25¢. Winners were: Boys 6 -7 - Brian Beauparlant, Marc Figliomeni, Brian Harper; Girls - Leanne Campbell, Jennifer Saarinen and Shanta LaBranche. Boys 8 = 12 - Cameron Sylven, Michael Beno, Robbie Ellicott, Girls - Andrea Stortini, Trina Tiller and Lisa Fearnley; Boys 10 - 11 - Glen Fearnley, Garry Sylven, Robbie Bolduc, Girls - Paulette Garneau, Joyce Glad and Lisa Lengyel; Boys 12 = 14 = Brent Mills, Marc Tricola, Bob Ellacott, Girls - Gail Beaupar- lant, Julia Stortini, Kathie McParland. Free treats for the children followed the races. The $50.00 draw for the day was won by Imma Amstrong. Addie Beaulieu ran the bingo; Daryl Davis and Cheryl John- son the Fish Pond; Ruth Hiller the Food Booth; Nean McKenna sold the cabbage rolls and Earline Johnson and Brenda Harper managed the hot dogs and hamburgers; Lorraine Weaver ran the draw for. the day. A dance ended the day. CHICOINE FAMILY REUNION: Warren and Estelle (Chicoine) Morrill and daughter Natasha are hosting a Chicoine family reunion. Their guests including Sanford and Lucette Chicoine, their parents from Newport Richy, Florida; Eddy and Marilyn Chicoine with Steven, Kim and Michelle of Kamloops; Lorne and Paulette (Chicoine) 0'Dri- scoll with Cindy and Jacqueline of Sudbury; Rick and Jan Chi- coine with Margo of Thunder Bay; Ron Chicoine of Toronto and Gaetane Chicoine of Calgary. The family all grew up in Schrei -ber and many old friends are dropping by to visit with the group.
