WILDERNESS: The programme has gone well so far. MWe are well into the course, and the children are enjoying it. They have been taught many things since July 4, and will learn even more. The first trip is scheduled for July 27 and 28. This will be a short introductory trip. The next trip will be Tonger and in more detail, EXPERIENCE '78 - PROGRAM 0701: Experience '78 program is set up for children 11 years of age and over. So far the program has not had a very good response. This program involves cycle trips, physical games, hikes and special events. The hours are from 1 - 5 p.m. PLAYGROUND: The playground program is very successful this year. In the morning session children from the age of 3-6 attend. In the afternoon children from the ages of 7-10 attend. So far the children have had mini-olympics, bubble gum blowing contest, various arts & crafts, sports, visited the police station, and plan to visit the Post Office soon. In the next few weeks there will be a big toe decorating contest, more arts & crafts, and the children will be putt- ing on various plays for their parents. MINOR BASEBALL: The baseball season for this year is rapidly coming to a close. The interest this year was fair. In 1979 we will be looking for bigger and better things. Also we will be calling on more parents next year to help out with the coaching and umpire system. SURVEY: ~ The survey team consists of Cathie Doig, Joyce Gauthier and-Marilyn O'Connor. These girls are going from dt to door to get the res- idents of Schreiber to fill out the survey form. Their main goal is to try and find out what the people think of the recreation in Schreiber and how it can be improved. og If you would Tike a survey fom they are available at the recreation office, also please return all the forms to the office if they have not been picked up yet. TENNIS: We are in the process of organizifig a community tennis tournament. There will be different age groups and winners of these age groups will be detemined at the end of the tournament. CONFEDERATION COLLEGE PROGRAMS: Anyone interested in registering for one of the Confeder~ ation College programs in the fall of 1978 please contact the recreation office. ARENA 'IPDATE: In the last three weeks there has been quite a lot of money (cash) arrive at this office. The July 1st dance which was well attended netted the fund $1,638.46, through the efforts of Roy Mills, his ticket sellers, and the ticket buyers a further $1,345.99 was con- tributed, and Gulf Canada donated $1,000.00 to the cash collection. This brings our total of cash, pledges, payroll deductions to $107,203.00. Again, it is emphasized that the fund prefers as much up front cash as possible; in this way there will be very little bridge financing or bank loan to repay plus interest. There has been two meetings with the consultant from the Ministry of Culture and Recreation about the arena and how to get this under construction in 1978. At this time another avenue is being looked at, and many people probably have heard of same, however, until there is something concrete to report and in the event of raising hopes, it is better to remain silent at this time. The existing arena has been put up for sale and tenders were being received up to last Friday. A11 revenue from this can be put in the public/private sector as a donation, matchable by Wintario. In this way the amount from the citizen on the street is reduced. The public will be kept as informed as possible through this column and f the monthly newsletter. Again, if there are any questions regarding the happenings please call or drop in at the Recreation Office and we will try to inform you with the data we have available. REGIONAL CHILDREN SOCIETY: There has been several thousand dollars allotted to N.W, Ontario to improve Children's Services. A group of local residents have met to have discussions on what could be done and reconvened with residents from Terrace Bay at the Public School Library. Several thoughts were discussed as to how to assist local youth. A few of these are: 1. a booklet of resources available to the people of the area (ie: Regional Childrens Services, located in Terrace Bay) 2. a direct hook-up with Tele-Care in Thunder Bay. continued page 17. sees cecscecse
