APRIL 19, 1978 TERRACE BAY NEW BOB FORTIN SPEAKS IN SCHREIBER nr ------ ------ --------_ -------------- -------------- ---------- Bob Fortin, speaking in Schreiber altacked the Trudeau Government's record on unemployment and on it's management of the Canadian economy. Mr. Fortin, the cardidate in the new federal Riding of Cochrane, along with MPP Jack Stokes, the Speaker of the Ontario Legislature, was the guest speaker at the Annual Meeting of the Lake Nipigon New Democratic Party, Speaking on the economy Mr, Fortin asked: "Why doesn'¥ the Trudeau 'government do sométhing to cope with unemployment and economic stagnation? The truth is they can't. They have been attacking every program which provides a measure of security for the average Canadian, apparently ignoring the fact that it is these same social security measures which have kept the economy from collapsing", Pursuing Tommy Douglas! line of attack on the North Pipeline agreement in the House of Commons, Mr. Fortin saids "We in the NDP agree that such a vast project could have beneficial effects for Canada's economf. But we have few if any guarantees that this pipeline will provide the kind of benefits to Canadians that it must to be acceptable. When the National Energy Board recommended this pipeline it stressed two major benefits for: Canada. The first was the Dempster Spur to carry Canadian gas for Canadian needs. The second was the assurance that the con- tent would be almost entirely Canadian". : In an oblique attack on MP Keith Penner who sat on the Nore thern Gas Pipeline Committee, Mr. 'Fortin said that: "Both of these benefits were considerably diminished during the negotiat- ing of the Canada-U,S, agreement. "The Dempster Spur is not likely to be built in the near future, if indesd it is ever built, and even more serious is that when the treaty was complet -ed there were no guarantees regarding Canadian content. The one benefit we counted on has been negotiated away.
