Board, the Senior ° students of Holy Angels and St. Martin Schools had the oppor- tunity to meet the international 1y-known Canadian composer, Rs Murray Schafer. Mr. Schafer, in addition to being a com- poser, is also an author who is very concerned with the "soundscape" - a word which he coined to indicate the world of sounds around us. He has written over forty major musical compositions including the opera Loving which appeared on C.B.C. television and eleven books, most of which deal with creative experiments in music education. His latest book, The Tuning of the World, resulted from The World Soundscape Project, research conducted under his leadership at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. In this work, Mr. Schafer voices his concern with the quality and quantity of sound in the world environment. Mr, Schafer believes that it is the task of music educators to turn students on to sound and silence and to engage students in a process of "ear cleaning", In all six participating classes, students were faced with "sound" problems and allowed to discover solutions, Often, students were asked to close their eyes in order to stimulate greater concentration on sounds. A grade 7 class created soundscapes of Schreiber, with one rendition involving a choreography of sounds. For one hour, grade 8 students com- municated verbally and in writing without uttering one word of English or any known language or using a letter of our ~ alphabet. The enthusiasm of the students once they overcame van initial reluctance to assume unfamiliar roles, indicates the degree of Mr. Schafer's rapport with the students and the success of his approach to teaching. . [t was particularly rewarding to witness the surprise of the students as they achieved satisfying results in each task and their eagerness to pursue further exploration. Mr. Schafer's visit to Terrace Bay/Schreiber was a memor- able occasion for all involved. ONTARIO MUNICIPAL RECREATION.
