LAST YEAR'S TIMBER HARVEST MAY BE BIGGEST IN 60 YEARS Ontario's Crown timber harvest is expected to reach 560 million cubic feet by the end of the current fiscal year-- the largest harvest since before First World War days. Natural Resources Minister Frank Miller said the forecast is based on a 20.2 per cent increase in the amount of Crown timber harvested by licensed operators in the first 10 months of this current fiscal year. From April, 1977, to January, 1978, the volume rose to 402 million cubic feet from 334 mil- . lion cubic feet for the same period a year earlier. "The major reason for the dramatic increase is the addition- al demand for wood caused by new and expanded pulp and paper facilities in northern Ontario," said Mrs Miller. Great Lakes Paper of Thunder Bay started up a new kraft pulp mill with a capacity of 250,000 tons per year in late 1976, along with a particle and waferboard facility. : Also, Kimberly-Clark expanded its Terrace Bay kraft pulp mill by an addi tional 315,000 tons annually last year. "Buoyant market conditions for lumber, plywood and particle -board and an increased use of domestic fuelwood has also added to the increased harvest," said Mr. Miller. "This doesn't mean we're overcutting the forest on Ontario! 412,000 square miles of Crown land, but that industry is harvesting more of what it's allowed to cut by licence." Mr. Miller said the ministry has already begun to boost nur -sery seedling production to provide for, the regeneration re- quired by the increased harvest.
