VOL. 21 NO, 8 FEBRUARY 22, 1978 20¢- PER COPY HOSPITAL NEWS To Smoke or Not To Smoke That is the question given to the Hospital Board. Again! A year ago, the Board of Governors debated - very seriously = the question of prohibiting smoking in all Patient Care areas, and decided there should be NO SMOKING in patient's bedrooms and the corridor adjacent to these rooms, as well as the fmer- gency room and naturally the X-ray room and Laboratory. Anyone wishing to smoke may do so in the General Waiting Room of the Hospital building. This decision was NOT made on a moral basis; nor on the fact that. the hospital is a Health Care Unit and we are working in the Health Field, but we did so as a purely SAFETY measure. This was stated in our earlier communique! The present fiospital building has been labelled "Unsafe" by the Fire Marshall. |t is also absolutely essential that there be NO SMOKING when exygen is in use! 5 So once more we are standing by our original decision. We have the responsibility of insuring the safety of all patients in our care - from the aged to the newborn. We cannot allow smoking in Patient Care Areas. Please help us by co-operating -_You wouldn't want a catastrophe on_your conscience. : Instead of that cigarette - "Chew Gum"!
