Program Consultant, Joan Gale, donating a copy of Foundation study z on "Alcohol Problems in North-Western Ontario" to Mrs. J. Marcella, Assistant Librarian, Ter- race Bay Library. The Thunder Bay Center of the Addiction Research Foundation has made available to the citizens of Terrace Bay and Schreiber a copy of a study dealing with "Alcohol Problems in Northwestern Ontario" through the services of the Terrace Bay Public Library. The study, which took A.R.F. researchers Joe Brown and Norm Giesbrecht nearly 2 years to complete, dealt with the three northern districts of Thunder Bay, Rainy River and Kenora. The statistics illustrate that alcohol con- sumption in northern Ontario has increased 34 percent between 1969 and 1974. The District of Thunder Bay, in which Terrace Bay and Sch- reiber are located, had the steepest rate of increase in alcohol consumption at 37.5 per- cent. The province as a whole increased by only 16 percent. The' authors stress that their study, along with other studies, indicates a link between alcohol consumption levels and the prevalence of social and health problems. They further state, in the report's conclusion, that along with the high rate of per capita consumption of alcohol in northwestern Ontario, there are indications that alcohol-related problems are more prevalent in the northwestern districts than the province generally. The rates for drinking and driving, public intoxication, and other offences under the Liquor Control Act, accidental and violent deaths, and alcohol- diagnosed hospital separations were higher in northwestern Ontario than in the province gen- erally. To curb the rising alcohol consumption and related problems, the report recommends the continued page 4...... (4
