VOL. 20 NO. 46 - NOVEMBER 30, I977 20¢ PER COPY Terrace Bay hospital given building approval The above headline was taken from The Times-News dated Saturday, November I9, I977. The article stated - quote - "Health Minister Dennis Timbrell announced Friday approval to pro -ceed with projects for (Port Arthur General Hospital) and Terrace Bay's Hospital. Construction of a new 23 bed hospital to replace the existing McCausland Hospital in Terrace Bay will begin before March 3I, I978 and cost more than $2 million". unguote - Sounds beautiful, doesn't it! What does it mean exactly? The Ministry of Health and our Development Committee have - after much discussion, many changes - on both sides and much frustration (on our part) met in agreement and our plans and costs have been approved. We have all been disappointed with the delays and many have been sceptical of the entire project but let us remember the Government is funding 5/6 of the total hospital construc- tion; tendered fixed equipment; furnishings and loose equipment; draperies and Architect's Fee (8%) for the hospital. The total estimated Ministry's cost will be 82,551,530.00. As they are using public money for this funding they must be sure it is used wisely and not just for an Architectural showcase. What about the Communities' responsibilities? We must pay I/6 of the construction cost of the hospital; of tendered fixed equipment; furnishings and loose equipment, draperies .. and Architect's Fee for the hospital. In addition we are responsible for all the Clinic costs; all the site works (paving and lighting); all the Architect's Fee for the Clinic and all the Architect's Fee for fixed equipment. (Equipment put in by Architects). Our total cost will be almost $740,000.00. Where are we now with our funds? Half-way?! Which means we must still raise $370,000.00 How? Hopefully by the concerned and dedicated effort of every man, woman and child in our hospital area. A donated dollar has almost three times the value of a dollar gained through taxation. You are able to deduct your donation from your income tax and Kimberly-Clark will, in turn, pay 40¢ on your dollar to the building fund. (We still have over $I2,000.00 to come from K.C. until we reach their S$I00 thousand limit). Pay the "Easy-way" - through Payroll - deduction. Plan or use Post=dated cheques. To pay through taxation is the "Forever- ever Plan". ; There are still many in our Communities who have not yet made a personal committment. Perhaps now, that you know the construction of the hospital is a reality, you will make that personal donation now. Continued page 6 ....
