PAGE 16 TERRACE BAY NEWS OCTOBER 26, 1977 RETIREMENT PARTY HONOURS MAC HUBELIT Mac Hubelit, a very versatile man who tried his hand at many occupations to earn a living, retired from catering to the public this month after closing his small confection and grocery store and garage business. ' Mr. Hubelit, known as Mac to his many friends, both young and old, was born and raised on a farm at Sheho, Sask., where he re- ceived his schooling. He was one of twelve children. He moved to Manitoba where he tried his hand at farming but finally came to Ontar- io and joined the lumberjack gang cutting tim- bers. He came to Rossport in 1945 and bought himself a boat, hired a crew and got into the beach combing struggle. He gave that up and entered the Nipigon Bay Fish company as a fish packer in 1942. He married the former Edith Gerow in 1946. When the fish began to disappear owing to the lamprey eel invasion of the lake, he and his wife decided to go into business on their own and opened a restaurant and garage in Rossport. They later branched out into a grocery and confectionery store. After the passing of Mrs. Hubelit a year ago, Mac decided to retire after twenty-two years in business. His sister-in-law Mrs. Leona Leisander and Mrs. Freda Duggan convened the surprise retire -ment party, Saturday night. They held a buf- fet supper from six to nine o'clock in the Com -munity Hall, followed by dancing with music by Leona Leisander, Lionel Hubelit, Maxine Wahl and Patsey Campbell. When Mr. Hubelit entered the hall he was greeted by twa of his children, Mrs. Maxine Wahl and Lionel Hubelit and family of Wawa. His daughter, Carol Rochon resides in B.C. and was unable to be present. Everyone sang "A Happy Retirement". The supper table was centered with a large cake in the shape of a garage, complete with gas tanks, made and decorated by Mrs. Freda Duggan. Russell Gerow was master of ceremon- ies and presented Mr. Hubelit with a purse of money from customers, relatives and friends. Present from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Russell Gerow, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Petreshack, and Mrs. V. Boustead of Thunder Bay; Mrs. Gil- bert Wahl, Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Hubelit and family, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Oliver of Wawa; Harry Tympko of Gurney; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Fournier of Terrace Bay; Mrs. Freda Duggan, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Costa of Schreiber as well as Rosspor- tites. Many telegrams and messages on retirement were received. ROSSPORT FIRES: Within the past week three fires occurred in the village. A bunk house at the old sawmill location was burned to the ground; Friday morn - -ing, the sawmill was discovered to be on fire and hastily got under control; Sunday morning Cyril Brassard's summer camp was afire. The Brassard family had gone hunting after break- fast. It is thought it may have started from the chimney of the oil space heater. All the interior was destroyed before the flames could be subdued. Most of the furniture was saved by local residents. What is needed in Rossport is a volunteer fire department. Over thirty years ago, the Rossport Conservation Club attempted to form such a group in the village but received very little encouragement from the villagers. It is about time something should be done. ) RATEPAYERS MEETING: On Friday, a meeting, chaired by R.T. Kenney and Floyd Harnden, act- ing secretary was held to decide what to do with the brick school building. After the school closed in 1970, the building was turned over to the villagers as a recreation centre. Because funds are not available to pay taxes, lights, fuel, water fees and repairs due to vandalism the villagers have agreed to sell the building and lots by sealed tenders. An advisory committee was appointed to assist the two remaining trustees -- namely Herb Legault and Mac Hubelit. They are Emma Molinski, Prina Gerow and Floyd Harnden.
