Up the drive way marched. four local Boy Scouts in full regalia, one carrying the Canadian Flag, another carrying the Scout Flag, while the other two carried a very special cert- ificate and a letter of announcement. With Scouts Robbie Cole and Lionel Ray Jr. as flag bearers, Scout Luc Lainey presented the certifi- cate for the Silver Acorn Award and the letter of announcement. Scout Earl Zotter spoke these words, ®¥e would like you.to accept this as a token of grat- "itude on behalf of all Boy Scout groups throughout Canada for your past years of service.® Mr. Thomas' Warren was speechless as he accepted the Silver Acorn Certificate, along with the letter notifying him that he will be presented with the Silver Acorn at Queens Park, Toronto on September 23, 1977 by the Lieutenant Governor. ji Mr. Warren was granted this Silver Acorn Award by His. Excellency Governor General of Canada who is "in his capacity Chief Scout for Canada. Scouting originally seeped through Tom's veins while he was still back in England, where as a young L) boy he spent 7 years in the Scout Movement and became a drum major in the band. In years to follow, he became scout leader for a littler over 4 years before coming to Canada. Tom arrived in Manitouwadge on December 2, 1957 and went to the cub Christmas party and at that time was asked to start a very long, fulfilling and rewarding involvement in cubs and scouts, In March 1978 he will have been involved for a quarter of a century in the Scout movement. During - this time, he was District Cub Master for three (3) years. During that time, the title was changed to Assistant District Commissioner. He held District Commissioner for 1 year having contact with scout and cubs groups from Schreiber to Manitouwadge. In 1962 Tom earned his Wood Badge. This is the ultimate badge of training in cubs and scouts and also scout leaders and masters. One of Tom's favourite accomplishments was in 1965, the year 32 participating cubs and scouts under his leadership faithfully practiced the Indian Dance, * This was demonstrated along the North Shore communities with a highlight presentation in 1967 in Thunder Bay on television. The last Indian Dance he was involved with was held in Manitouwadge approximately 2 years ago with 12-14 cubs and scouts during a Fair Weekend. A trip to Winnipeg is a memorable recollection for Tom when he took 4 local boys from Manitouwadge to receive the award of Queen Scouts. The Governor General presented Mr. Warren with a certificate of merit and the four (4) Queen Scouts were Dan Fraser, Dave O'Halloran, Jacques Berube and Theo Gionet. Tom Warren also holds a "Warrant of Appointment® and a "Long Service Medal™. In 1973 he was bestowed 2 - awards - "The Medal of Merit® and "A Certificate of Merit" from the Royal Canadian Legion, Mani touwadge Branch #242, for recognition in loyal and outstanding service, 1974 surpassed the previous year with the "Citizen of the Year Award" being presented to Tom. Framed and proudly displayed on Tom's livingroom wall is a scroll which reads ® This scroll is presented to you Thomas Warren in recognition of your faithful and devoted services in the Community of Mani touwadge, Ontario over the past 15 years" "Because of your leadership to youth, hundreds of our young citizens learn the value of respect, - cooperation, honesty and devotion to man ind through learning and earning their cub and boy scout badges - for this you may be proud." Tom also was directly involved and helped initi- ate "The Beavers® (boys 5-8 yrs). We know we will find Tom involved with the boys again this fall and winter season. He was very surprised and pleased to receive such a high award but admitted that he does enjoy working with the cubs and scouts. On behalf of all the citizens of Manitouvadge, +e congratulate you, Mr. Tom Warren, for receiving such a high award, as the Silver Acorn. A
