Timbrell, Minister of Health: Dear Jack, ; You are of course correct in stating in your letter of May 30 that I have undertaken to ensure funding for construction of a new hospital in Terrace Bay. I am anxious, as you are, that construction shall start as early as possible, but at the same time I should like to eliminate any misunderstandings which may exist as to what this means in practical terms. It was not my intention, when I made a pub- lic announcement on this matter, to convey the impression that tenders could be called almost: immediately. Indeed I made the point'in my press release that the project was not expect- ed to go to tender before August of this year, with construction continuing until February: 1979. These projection dates, incidentally, were those advanced by the hospital's archi- tect in the early, functional program, stage the planning process. I have received a complete summary of the of events which have taken place in regard to this project to date and, in all fairness, I must say that I can perceive no evidence of tardi- ness on the part of the staff of the Planning Branch. Rather the reverse. The statement that the whole project is ' still up in the air because Mr. Visakaly, in- sists that the total area be reduced from 32,000 square feet to 29,000 square feet is an over-simplification and warrants examination. The facts are that a target figure of 26,000 square feet was established and made known to the hospital in August last year. Continued page 14 ....
