Ryan Reunion: The family of the late Charlie Ryan, enjoyed a gala family reunion recently, choosing Thunder Bay as a central meeting point. Mr. Ryan, a pioneer citizen of Schreiber, worked on the railway until he was involved in a train wreck which left him seriously injured, when he resigned and established a business. And, he also made a name for himself as a noted wag, and in Schreiber, that takes a natural talent, and an observant eye - so some of his comments, are repeated to this day, with relish and laughter. For instance: in those early days, when almost every house- hold in Schreiber used a shovel - borrowed from the C.P.R., Charlie was the only one who could prove a legal claim - declar- ing that C.P.R. stood for Charles Patrick Ryan. . : And, many an oldster in town can remember 'hitching rides' on Charlie's sleigh in winter. Charlie would give an admon- itory shout - You kids - Get Off There! But having.done that failed seemingly to notice that not only kids were hanging on, for the bracing swift ride about the streets, but were holding sleighs on which other smaller kids were riding. And, one Christmas Eve, he made an instant conversion of a small boy, visiting at a neighbours, vehemently declaiming his belief in Santa Claus, the chum he was talking to advising him that if he did not believe - no presents would he get. And, just at that moment, Charlie went by, bells ringing - a dark star spangled night and instant belief. The little unbeliever exclaimed - There he is. And in three leaps was out of the house across the street and had his stocking hung up. Among the planned gatherings were a barbeque in the home of Dave Kennedy, a luncheon hosted by Mrs. Mel Relph (Agnes Ryan) a dinner and dance at the Ortonoa Legion and a tea hosted by Mrs. Ray Johnson. - continued page I4 ....c.cc0.
