PAGE 18 TERRACE BAY NEWS JUNE 4, 1975 RADIO CONTROL SYSTEMS URGED FOR THUNDER BAY MUTUAL FIRE AID ASSOCIATION The Annual General Meeting of the Thunder Bay Mutual Fire Aid Association was held at Marathon in the Moose Hall on Saturday, May 24th, 1975 Thirty-four members from eleven different municipal- ities joined together to partake in an excellent lunch -eon and an afternoon meeting and training session. The Meeting was chaired by President Edward Stachiw from Terrace Bay. The Co-ordinator of the Thunder Bay Mutual Fire Aid, Deputy Fire Chief Jack Bryant from Thun- der Bay gave a report on the activities of the mem- ber communities. Mr. Bryant talked about the up- grading of the Fire Service within our total region. An urgent request was made to set up a Radio _Communications System for the whole of the Thunder Bay Area. A thought was expressed that since the Ontario Emergency Health Services had a complete link-up throughout the whole of the Province, sure- ly we could do the same of Mutual Fire Aid in Thun- der Bay District. The guest speaker for the main theme was Inspec tor Max Cooper from the Fire Investigation Branch of the Ontario Fire Marshal's office. Mr. Cooper's talk was based on arson and arson detection. The message was a direct challenge to all Fire Chiefs to be careful in the investigation of causes of fire and if suspicion was aroused that he, (Mr. Cooper) should be called right away, a guard should be placed on the premises so no-one could destroy the evidence. Mr. Cooper went on to say that in the last four -years in Northwestern Ontario the Investigation Branch of The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office have had from 54% to 78% success in the convictions of persons charged with-arson offences. Captain Jack Van Brunt of The Thunder Bay Fire Department talked on Overhaul In The Fire Service. He dealt with the problems, rekindling, arson, what to look for and method of attack. Mr. Van Brunt's message was well received by all present. Two films were shown "You & Yours" based on fire prevention in the home and 'Date with Disaster" a planning film on major disasters in the Los Angeles Basin. The structure of the planning team and their method of operation was of particular interest to the members of the Mutual Fire Air Association. The next meeting is slated for Thunder Bay in the Fali.
