With the en- couragement of fellow riders, he jumps the tracks over onto his brothers train for a tear -ful reunion. Of course, it would be impossible to get a moving train on stage. Rather than using in- tricate sets, the whole effect is achieved by the clever use of mime and lighting. In the background, actors sit with bowls, cans and butter churns from a previous scene and turn these household implements into sound effects for the moving trains. In a similar fashion, the stage turns into a classroom to hear the news of the abdication of King Edward VIII. Family and friends gath- er together to listen to the Joe Louis fights and hear dramas on local radio. These scenes and others provide a view of the role played by radio in seeing Canadians through those tough, bitter years. Not only do the audience members watch the radio listeners, but they also get a look at actual radio production -- the actors, techni- cians and the overworked sound effects man fishing into his bag of tricks in such a fast and hilarious succession that it doesn't seem humanly possible. Apart from the compelling drama and pathos of TEN LOST YEARS, the production is worth seeing in terms of its intriguing theatrical devices. It's not too often that theatre- goers can see a moving train on stage and when Toronto Workshop Productions bring their "train" to Terrace Bay on Thursday, October I0th, it's not to be missed.
