He told them their duty and how serious the decision was that they were to make and how they must not come to any decision before all the evidence was heard. When the judge had finished speaking, the Crown Attorney gave his opening remarks, stat- ing his case. After him, the Defence Attorney gave his statement. We recessed for lunch after we had heard from both attorneys. The Crown discussed the admissibility of certain evidence and witnesses with the judge after lunch. The jury was not in court at this time. The question was whether or not the court would allow certain photographs as evidence for the Crown. The judge thought the photos might make the jury prejudiced. The pictures were of the dead baby and were to show that the child died because of the beating. A pathologist was called to prove this and was asked if he felt the photographs were necess- ary to prove the point. He said that they were, so the judge final- ly allowed the black and white prints as ev- idence, because they would not be 'quite as in- fluential as the coloured ones. The jury came back in, after the afternoon recess, and witnesses were called. Two wit- nesses were examined while we were there; they were a police constable and the coroner at Geraldton. It would be almost a week before the court could hear all the evidence and make a decis- ion. We are trying to keep up with the case by listening to the news reports.
