SPORTS SLANTS - By Ray Shank As you might understand, if you read this column periodically, I'm not exactly jumping with joy at the way my Canadiens have been per- forming in this year's Stanley Cup playoffs. By the time you read this, the Monteal-New York quarter-final series will be over. As this column is written, however, the series stands at 2-2 and the Canadiens are headed back for Montreal after getting 6-4 by the Rangers in New York Sunday. Both teams split a pair of games in their respective home rinks and now I'm just keeping my finders crossed that the old adage about 'home ice advantage' will prevail for the re- mainder of the series, although it didn't help Toronto or Philadelphia in two of the three other series. I have no doubt in my mind now that Scotty Bowman will definitely be fired as coach of the Canadiens after this season =-- regardless whe- ther the Habs win it all or get ousted by New York in the first round. The guy has to be out of his mind using Michel Larocque in goal when his best performer all year was Wayne Thomas -- if there was a 'best' goalie. Admittedly, Larocque made some fabulous saves in Sunday's fourth game against the Ran- gers, but he's certainly not a playoff goalie. He doesn't make the crucial saves, when the team needs them most. Bowman has been juggling lines like a luna- tic against the Rangers and a good, steady coach doesn't do that unless he's desperate in playoff hockey. Bowman has lost the respect of many of his players this year and that might be the Canadiens' biggest downfall. I tend to think that the team will stick to- gether and get by the Rangers, because they are, man for man, a better hockey club. Man for man, they are also a better hockey club than Phila- delphia Flyers, the team they'll meet if they oust New York. But I'm afraid to forecast what will happen when the Canadiens face the big, bad Flyers. And for that reason, I'll refrain from comment- ing on the Canadiens until after the Stanley Cup has been won. Rumours have it that John Ferguson will get the coaching job with Canadiens next season. My only comment about that is, the sooner the better.
