Vol. I7. No. I6 April 24, I974 20¢ Per Copy BELL HOPES TO IMPROVE TV RECEPTION Terrace Bay may be one of more than I00 On- tario communities to benefit from a new tele- vision transmission network proposed by Bell Canada. The proposal is for a province-wide trans- mission network to carry four high-quality television channels into all communities of 1,000 households or more. The signals would be retransmitted to individual residences by local cable television companies. Bell has discussed the proposal with repre- sentatives of the Canadian Radio Television Commission (CRTC), and the Federal and Provin- cial ministries responsible for communications. Approval for the develcopment of such a network would come from the government authorities, who would also decide what programming should be carried. Bell would act only as the provid- er of transmission facilities. The Bell proposal could kring improved tel- evision signals to many communities that now receive only poor-quality signals or a limited choice of channels, which could originate from any scurce and le in either English or French. J.C. Thackray, executive vice-president for Bell's operations in Ontario, said the new transmission network cculd bring greatly im- proved TV reception to many communities, and a greater selection cf proyrams. lie said that kell Canada was in a anilqgue position tc provide such a service since it al- ready has a widest read microwave transhisoion gystem throughout the province. 'the projoued television transmission network would be carr- ied on the vicroewave system, supplemented ty new extensions inte some communities. Were you one of the 238 who attended or were you numbered among the II99 persons who paid a dollar to become a member of the Corporation, and then your in- terest ended. Sure, your dollars are needed and appreci- ated. But it takes more than dollars to keep our hospital open. Or don't you care, if the doors of McCausland Hospital are closed, be- cause of apathy on behalf of the local Cipti- zens. : Your hospital board needs your support as well as your dollars. They have worked eo: tremely hard to try and devise ways and tans to provide a new and up-dated Medical Centre, one cof which we can be justly proud, but wore important, one which will sdacquately serve the health needs of cur community.
