PLAN MAY PENNY AUCTION Members of the Schreiber Women's Institute answered roll call at their March meeting by presenting packages of home made cookies, later used in a penny auction. They received word from the Canadian Coun- cil in Ottawa that they are to be recipients of a book kit program for this year. This book kit is comprised of two hundred books in English written by early and contemporary authors. : ; Information was received from the Home Economist, Thunder Bay, about forthcoming training schools for leaders, and short cours- es. Mrs. Margaret Fuller, chairman of the Er- land Lee Home, in Stoney Creek, wrote saying the Home will be open to visitors from Monday to Friday every Month except February. And this year, June IO to I4 will be declared Women's Institute Week, with interesting ac- tivities carried on daily in the Home. Mrs. Wesley Clemens reported on the Dis- trict Directors' meeting held in Thunder Bay when plans were completed for the District annual meeting behing held on May I5 in Pass Lake. Mrs. Barbara Weese, Home Economist, invited members to attend Achievement Day in Block Printing and the Nutrition Workshop being held later this year. Canadian current events were discussed, and locally, the float from Birchwood Terrace Home in Terrace Bay winning first prize in the winter carnival. Mrs. Clemens read both minutes of the last meeting and the treasurer's report. Mrs. Charles Todesco presided for the meet- ing. : Penny auction tickets were placed on order for the May sale planned and members asked to bring hand sewn or novelty articles to the April meeting to be used at the sale. ? 01d school text books and primers had been brought by members and these were studied, with many vivid recollections about the years when they were used. Mrs. Todesco read an interesting paper on the early history of her father's family who had settled in the Toronto area. Mrs. Norma Fummerton won the prize ina serviette-folding contest. The tea table was covered with a green cloth, with Irish symbols and lunch served by Mesdames J.D. Bryson, A. Yates and Bernice Jacomb. "while space lasts. SENIOR CITIZENS ENJOY BOWLING A dinner preceded the general March meeting of the Chimo Senior Citizens Club, held in the Club in Schreiber, attended by 38, Rossport and Terrace Bay members also present. Mrs. Mary Chadwell, of Terrace Bay, presi- ded for the meeting. It was agreed to meet with Keith Penner, M.P. on Friday, March 22 in an informal discussion. A letter of appreciation was sent to Terrace Bay Winter Carnival Committee for the club's enjoyment of the bowling tournament arranged for senior citizens during their program, with lunch served. A remuneration for members using their cars to take members to executive meetings in Rossport and Terrace Bay was set. An additional signing officer was appointed this winter presenting difficulties, with the "illness of the past president, present presi- dent, and, executive officer being away on extended winter vacation. Harry Costall presented a tentative list of House Rules and it was agreed to leave the acceptance of these to the executive. The Terrace Bay bowling centre's offer of bowling at reduced rates, for club members, during Friday afternoons, was gratefully accepted. Information was read regarding the first Northwestern Ontario Fiddling Contest, for those 60 years and over, being held on April 17, in the Royal Edward Hotel. There is no charge for entries, and admission is free - It was suggested those interested in attending, as audience, should secure reserved tickets. Following the meeting a social evening was enjoyed, . with amusing contest and a round of old songs. The next general meeting will be held on April I9th at 7:30 P.M. A happy group are enjoying a winter holiday touching at Puerto Rico and other adjacent places - the party including Mr. and Mrs. Joe Caccamo, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cocks, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Dunwoodey, and Mr. and Mrs. Hartley McKay. 3 Mrs. Della Moore and Mr. Charlie Boon attended the funeral of their brother, Alfred Boon, in Ignace on March I3th. Mr. and Mrs. Ron Hamilton and son Aaron of Thunder Bay spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. D.Q. Hamilton.
