PAGE I4 TERRACE BAY NEWS . ® DECEMBER 12, 1973 HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING Tne Terrace Bay Horticultural Society held their Annual Meeting on November 22, 1973 in the large meeting room of the Recreation Cen- tre. President, John Steen presided. The Society had a very successful year with a membership of 215. Mr. Hyacinthe Landry reported that the Ann- ual Flower and Vegetable Show, while not one of the largest, was one of the best as to quality of exhibits. There were 14 adult ex- hibitors with 312 individual entries. The judge felt also that the Junior exhib- its were very good as to display and quality. | Mr. Steen stated that he would like to Place a fertilizer order by mid-February, therefore requests for orders be placed with him as soon as possible. Bug and magot killers are also available. Mr. Steen thanked the Directors for their 'co-operation over his years as President, and wished the new President, Mrs. Hilda Hiebert the same. Trillium Awards for the 1973 growing season were presented to Mr. and Mrs. Art Beaulieu and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Baron of Terrace Bay, and Mr. and Mrs. Shack, Senior, and Mrs. Kuz- ma of Schreiber. : Honourable mentions went to the Ontario Pro- vincial Police and the Catholic Church, Schrei-| ber and the McCausland Hospital and the Cath- olic Church, Terrace Bay. The 1974 slate of Directors are: President Mrs. Hilda Hiebert; lst Vice-President Mr. H. Landry; 2nd Vice-President Mr. G. Buhrmann; Treasurer Mrs. I. Steen; Secretary Mrs. E. Mannisto. SPORTS SLANTS - By Ray Shank Highest scoring line in the NHL last year, if memory serves me right, was Boston's Expos- ito-Cashman~-Hodge trio. From the look of things, the Bruins' Big 3 is about to repeat the feat this season in record-breaking fashion. It took quite a lot of figuring, but after putting my mathematical mind to work, I've got it down here on paper. At the rate the E-&-H line of the Bruins is going, two of the three could surpass the 100 point mark and -- belie- ve it or not -- Phil Esposito could score some -thing like 85 goals and wind up with around 180 points. With less than one-third of the schedule (23 games) played so far this year, Espo had 25 goalds and 28 assists for 53 points. That, mathematically speaking amounts to an average of 1.09 goals a game and 2.30 points. Multi- ply that by 78 and you get 75.02 goals and 179.40 points. Hodge, meanwhile, had 18 goals and 20 assis -ts for 38 points after 23 games. With a lit- tle figuring, that averages out to 61.07 goals | and 128.70 points. Cashman, at the up with a 'measly' points. Total that up and what have you got? rate he's going, will wind 31.99 goals and=88.14 Esposito -- 75.02 goals, 179.40 points Hodge ~- 61.07 goals, 128.70 points Cashman -- 31.99 goals, 88.14 points Total --168.08 goals, 396.24 points. It's very unlikely that the Boston trio can" keep up the pace through 78 games, but the fact of the matter is, that's what could happen. Ridiculous? You bet! Consider that the threesome was the highest producing line in the NHL last year. Now, do you know what their combined total was in 1972-73? The three teamed up 121 goals (47 less than what they could score this season) and 279 points (117 less than the projected. total for this year). It makes you wonder if there's anyone else on the team. Yes, of course, there is someone else on the team. Bobby Orr, the whiz kid from Parry Sound. Must give you some statistics for Super Boy too, to make this story that much more inter- esting. After 23 games, Orr had 13 goals and 29 assists for 42 points. Now you add Orr's totals and figure out what he could get for the year and it comes out like this: 45.79 goals and a total of 142.74 points. Now you add the total of those four players and you get this: 213.87 goals and 538.98 points. . All told, Esposito, Hodge, Cashman and Orr had I50 goals and 380 points last season -- 63 less goals and 158 fewer points. Oh, and there's more. continued page I5
