ECEMBER 12,1973 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 9 SEPARATE SCHOOL BOARD PRESS RELEASE The Schreiber-Terrace Bay District R.C.S.S. oard has taken strong exception to statements yf Ms. McIlveen of the Teachers' Association jeadquarters. Speaking on behalf of the Teach- srs' Provincial Association, her statements seem to indicate she does not know and under- stand the real situation in Schreiber-Terrace 3ay. Contrary to statements made, the Board is very interested in arriving at a settlement, and is interested in any further worthwhile meetings. With the short notice given by the Toronto Teachers' Association representative, it was impossible for the Board to meet at the time requested. However, the Board has alrea- dy participated in ten meetings,. and has agreed to a Provincial level meeting on Decem--- per I0, I973. This is the earliest date for which Board approval could be secured and for which the Board can have adequate assistance to meet the high-powered hired professional teacher negotiators from Toronto. The Teachers' Association representative stated that teachers should not be expected to settle for less than others in the area are getting; that provincial increases are around 8.5% and that the teachers are asking for a 6.1% increase. : If all increases, fringe benefits and in- crements involved in the teachers' request are assessed, the teachers are asking for a 9.9% increase over last years' salaries. The Board is offering a package which, counting all increases, is an 8.59% increase. The Board has studied the salary scales of many Boards in the province and in particular, those of the seven Public and Separate School Boards in the immediate area. The Board is offering the teachers a higher salary scale than that enjoyed by any one of the sevensarea Boards in this part of North Western Ontario, as well as places like Toronto. While the Board sympathizes with the teach- ers needs in an age of rapid inflation, it cannot continue to go further and further ahead of salaries paid by other Boards without soon running into large tax hikes and ceiling prob- lems. . The Toronto, Teachers' Association represen= tative notes that the teachers were put in a position of having to resign. Even now the Board has not formally accepted the resigna- tions while it continues to meet with the Teachers Provincial representative. The Board hopes that the staff will have the same concern that it has in not depriving the children cf school in January. However, in no way can the Board make an offer so far in excess of other Boards that at some point in the near future, with new teachers all com- ing in at higher levels, it would be faced wit with serious financial problems.
