FOREST MANAGEMENT IN THE TERRACE BAY DISTRICT The Ministry of Natural Resources' Terrace Bay District covers our area of approximately 5,000 square miles. It is bounded by Lake Superior in the south and the village of Stev- ens in the north. It extends eastward from the Gravel River to White Lake Provincial Park. Most of the Crown Land Timber rights in the District are licenced to the wood using indus- try excepting the Steel River Management unit which is unlicenced. The Ontario Paper Company Limited, American Can of Canada Limited, Kimberly-Clark of Canada Limited, Weldwood of Canada Limited, and the St. Lawrence Corporation (Domtar) hold short and long term Timber licences in the Dis- trict under the authority of the Crown Timber Act. These companies harvest timber for the manufacture of wood products in their mills in Thorold, Marathon, Terrace Bay, Longlac and Red Rock. The bulk of the Kimberly-Clark Licence is located in the Geraldton District, whereas the greater part of the American Can Licence is located in the Terrace Bay District. This is one of the factors making Manitouwadge the' geographic centre for our forest management activities. Because of this, all of the Dis- trict forest management staff are located in Manitouwadge rather than Terrace Bay. One of the Ministry's objectives is to man- age our forests, as a source of raw material for the wood using industry. Forest manage- ment must also meet recreational and environ- mental needs. We attempt to carry out these tasks by controlling the size and location of harvest operations, providing lake and stream shoreline reserves, ensuring proper wood util- ization and promoting regeneration (a new tree crop) on cutover areas.
