HALLOWEEN CANVASS Again this year, the students of St. Mare tin's School will be conducting the door-to- door Halloween canvass in Terrace Bay on be-= half of UNICEF. UNICEF (The United Nations Children's Fund) is an 'operational arm of the United Nations. Formed as an emergency organization to help victims of World War II, it's task is now the protection and care of children in the develop -ing nations - from before they are born until they are ready to start work. For its work in helping children, UNICEF received the I965 Nobel Peace Prize. UNICEF is governed by a 30-nation Executive Board which sets policy and allocates funds for projects. Its field staff throughout the developing world work directly with the gov- ernments of these countries. UNICEF's staff _ helps governments develop programs to bene- fit children and mothers. Its assistance is in the form of training programs, supplies and equipment. UNICEF's programs, except for emergencies, are long-range: to improve health education, nutrition and family and child wel- fare. UNICEF's income comes entirely from volun- tary contributions from governments and from people like YOU. Here in Terrace Bay, the students collected $160.37 in the I97I Hallo- With your help this can be increased. : When you give to UNICEF, do you know what investment you're getting? Give some thought to the following statistics .... ~- we spend more in two hours on world armaments than we spend on world development in a whole year. - there are 32 million children who suffer from malnutrition so severe that they will never be healthy or fully developed. - We in Canada alone spend $I00 million on cosmetics each year. - three quarters of all the children in developing countries get no education at all ~- or at least none beyond Grade three -- because there aren't enough teacher. - ten cents will buy a bag of potato chips or the vaccine to protect IO children from small pox. = every coin you give helps child- ren all over the world: 5¢ sends them 25 glas -ses of milk: IO¢ saves two children from bli- ndness; 25¢ will buy a baby chick; $I.00 will buy 20 bars of soap. _ When witches and goblins come to your door on Halloween, many of them will be carrying UNICEF collection tins. Please help those less fortunate than we are. The choice is ours. «oe
