TERRACE BAY NEWS Vol. I6 No. 41 October I7, I973 - I5¢ Per Copy STUD MILL FOR TERRACE BAY Kimberly-Clark of Canada Limited will build a $3.3 million stud mill, dry kiln and planer operation at Terrace Bay, it was announced in Toronto on October 9th by Hon. Leo Bernier, Minister of Natural Resources, and A.F. Hay- craft, president of Kimberly-Clark. "This mill," said Mr. Bernier, "will comple- ment the government's policy of greater utili- zation of all woods species and make an invalu- able contribution to the strengthening of the economy of that part of Northern Ontario." Mr. Haycraft called the new mill "a sound addition to the company's already extensive woods, pulp and lumber operations in the Terrace Bay-Longlac area". Construction will begin this fall, with completion set for next fall. The mill will have 35 million board feet ment for 60 people in operations. Chips and shavings from the stud mill will ' be used in Kimberly-Clark of Canada's existing kraft mill, which produces 150,000 tons of pulp a year and employs 950 people in mill and woodlands operations. The kraft mill is locat- ed in Terrace Bay = I50 miles east of Thunder Bay on the north shore of Lake Superior. "The new stud mill will enable the company to take advantage of the relatively strong lumber market foreseen for the next several years," said Mr. Haycraft. He noted that Kimberly-Clark has been in the lumber business for more than 20 years and had started up a new dimension lumber mill, with an annual capacity of 40 million board feet, at Longlac in 1969. We hope to have a picture and an outline story of this for next week's News. Beginning the regular Township Council meeting with Reeve Bray and all Councillors present the minutes of their last regular meeting were passed. The minutes of a spec- ial meeting were also adopted with business arising from these having to do with the Marathon report on garbage and a report that the hose requested by the Recreation Depart- ment had been supplied. Continuing on with the reading of corres- pondence a request was received from Mr. P. Vanderkam for option on the same lots on Lakeview Drive as had previously been request- ed by another resident. Council will reply in the same manner that no development is be- ing foreseen at this time. A letter from the Ministry of the Environ- ment caused some concern with Council. Apparently this letter stated the township's land fill site was not in accordance with this departments regulations. This was the third letter from the Ministry, each being signed by a different representative. The first stated the site was in good order with a list of recommendations for further upgrad- ing; the second stated the certificate of approval was enclosed and now the third tell- ing the township the site does not meet stand- ards.
