SEPTEMBER 26, I973 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 7 HEALTH COUNCIL MEETING Dr. J.C. Baldwin and Dr. Jane Pickersgill were the guest speakers at a meeting held re- cently in the Terrace Bay Campus auditorium. Dr. Baldwin is the Area Planning Co-ordinator for the Ministry of Health. His topic was the formation of a District Health Cofincil. Dr. Baldwin stressed the need for a re-or- ganization of the Ministry. of Health, in which the public would play a paer in this direction Dr. Baldwin stated that the Health Services group is responsible for implimenting compre- hensive health care programs through some form of local structure. Hence the idea of a District Health Council. A close and effec- tive relationship between the Ministry and the District Health Councils will be essential and it is planned to accomplish this kind of rela- tionship through Area Planning Co-ordinators. It is hoped that by combining the princip- les of public involvement and participation and using all relevent technical knowledge and skills, a powerful force can result that will serve the people better in meeting their needs for health services. It has been decided to commence work with five initial District Health Councils that will serve as learning and training grounds for all concerned. The five areas selected for initial District Health Councils are Otta- wa, Hamilton, Niagara, Thunder Bay and Sudbury The Area Planning Co-ordinators are the pr -incipal link between the Ministry and the District Health Councils. Dr. Baldwin assured us that the needs of small isolated communit= ies must be considered. He hoped to have the names of two or three interested persons who would serve on-a steering committee, working with the regional centre to plan to meet the needs of the area, to set the Priorities, and to help change the direction of health care delivery. It is only with citizen involvement that in partnership with the agencies and pro- fessionals, a District Health Council can be a force for good. A question and answer period followed, with some interesting information coming forth. COUNTERFEIT 50s 1 An urgent warning to the public has been released by the O.P.P. Anti-Rackets branch re- garding counterfeit fifty dollar bank notes. A flood of counterfeit fifty dollar bank notes has hit the Province of Ontario in the last week. The notes are of excellent quality and very difficult to detect. As a result, all fifty dollar bills are suspect. Ten persons have been arrested and charged since the weekend at Trenton, Collingwood and Peterborough. Notes have also turned up in London and Hamilton. Normally, counterfeit notes are imprinted with the same serial numbers, however, in this case there is a sequential variance of numbers which adds to the difficulty. Anyone accepting a fifty dollar bill during the next several weeks should be sure of the person's identity. The simplest method for detection is to hold the bill against a strong light which will re- veal an otherwise invisible number of planche- ts which are implanted in legal bank note pap- er. By using this method the absence of an increased number of planchets is generally an indication that the bill is counterfeit. If this should occur, contact your local Police office immediately.
