The price of macaroni has also risen nearly 4 per cent in the past I2 months. The domestic price to millers of the particular wheat (durum) required to make macaroni and other pastas has risen from $I.95 to $7.99 per bushel (about 300 per cent) in the past month - since July I9th when the Canadian Wheat Board last changed its supp- ort price policy. Unless ac- tion is taken the retail pri- ces of these products, which have already risen slightly over the past year, may be expected to rise a further 75 per cent in the near fut- ure. We are not making at pres- ent any recommendations with regard to the mass consump- tion meats such as hamburger, sausages and weiners. We will, however, continue to watch closely the price move- ments of these commodities. The prices of a number of other staples, such as cann- ed baked beans, dairy foods and eggs, are governed by the policies of federal and provincial government agenc- ies and producer marketing boards. We have special stu- dies underway on a number of these policies and organiza- tions and reports on them, and how their activities aff- ect current supplies and food prices, will be made availa- ble as soon as possible. We have noted that the On- tario Bean Producers Market- ing Board has increased the price of white beans used in canned baked beans by nearly . I00 per cent for the I973 crop. We are investigating the effect this will have on the retail price of this pro- duct.
