And those 600 are among the best U.S. college golfers in the States. Then it costs a golfer anywhere between $3,500 and $6,500 to join one of the tours, which lasts from IO to 20 .weeks. But these - preliminary tours aren't the biggies like the U.S. Open or the PGA. They're just 36-hole tourneys involving about $25,000 total prize money, top prize usually about $4,000. These tours are called mini-tours. About 2 or 3 per cent of those who make it to the mini-tours wind up on the major circuit. The big names like Palmer and Nicklaus will tell you that once you hit the major tour, you need to win anywhere between $40,000 and $60,000 just to break even. Lesser-knowns can get by with $25,000 in winnings and wind up in the black, but they don't eat big, juicy steaks and live in the best hotels while on tour. So, just a word of caution before you attem- pt to follow other Canadians like George Knud- son on the pro golf circuit. Be ready to play under pressure at all times, play your best game constantly and, most important, have a couple IOO-thousand dollars to shell out ... Among them were South African great Gary Player, who shot 73-76-1149 for the first two rounds; last year's Open winner, Gay Brewer, who was 74-75-I49 for the first two days, and U.S. Open champ this year, Johnny Miller, who couldn't put it all togeth- er, shooting dreadful rounds of 7I-78, also for a two-round total of I79 ...... Still with golf, seven-year-old Andrew Haley of Martinsville, Va. shot his first hole -in-one recently at his home course, but fail- ed to qualify for the Guiness Book of World Records as the game's youngest golfer to re- cord an ace. Young Haley drove his tee shot directly into the cup on the I20-yard, par 3, I3th hole with a five-iron. He's been playing since he was two. The world record, however, is apparently owned by a youngster who was only six years, 36 days old when he recorded his first hole-in-one ...... And just to prove that you don't have to be in the best of shape to play some sports, out of Fairmont, W. Va. comes the true story about Mrs. Judy Miller, a teacher, winning the second annual women's division Jaycees tennis tournament. What's odd about this is that Mrs, Miller, who defeated three opponents, includ- ing Jo Ann Van Gilder, 6-0, 6-0, to take top prize, was eight months pregnant when she achieved her feat. No doubt she'll give birth. to a "bouncing" baby something ...... Montreal Expos, who, as of last Tuesday had a respectable won-lost record of 50-53, have a good chance of winning 80 or more this season, which is what manager Gene Mauch said they'd need to win the National League east pennant.
