AUGUST I, I973 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE 7 Sports Slants - continued ........ Stapleton becomes the 20th. SPORTS SHORTS: Judging by the scores of pre-season exhibition games, it would appear the eastern conference has it all over the west in this year's Canadian Football League. In eight exhibition involving east and west teams this summer, the east won six, lost one and tied one. Montreal Alouettes, for instance, beat Saskatchewan Roughriders right in Regina, and, in one of the last two games of the schedule, Toronto Argonauts dumped the Stampe- ders right in Calgary. The Alouettes and Argos by the way, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, last year, wound up with the best won-lost exhibition records, each winning three and losing one. When Sparky Anderson's National League All- Stars whomped the American League 'Stars 7-1 last week, it marked the first time Anderson- managed teams had defeated AL Opposition in four tries. Sparky's Cincinati Reds twice lost the World Series against American League foes and, as manager of the I97I NL "Stars, he lost again. The National League, by the way, has won IO of the last II All-Star games. All told, the National League leads the American League 25-I8 in all-star competition. Jack Nicklaus may be the best pro golfer of the circuit, but he'd better watch out for his son, Jack Jr. Young Jack, who is only II years old, already shoots in the low 80s. Give him four or five more years and he'll be up there challenging dad and the other circuit hot -shots. A short Casey Stengel story. It seems Marv Throneberry of the Mets had tripled but was called out for not touching second base and, after a long argument, Casey asked his first- base coach why he hadn't joined in the heated debate. "Because he (Throneberry) didn't touch first base either," came the reply. APPOINTMENT The Plaza Theatres Ltd.
