AUGUST I, I973 TERRACE BAY NEWS PAGE I5 CONTROLLED BURNING AS A FORESTRY TOOL - By S. Meeks During early August, the Anthony Lake area will become the site of a prescribed burn. The area is located 22 miles north of the town of Manitouwadge, in the I972-73 American Can cutt- ing area. The cutting operations in the area were spread out over a period from April I972 to March I973. The area was selected for burning because of its productivity, as well as the need to re- move accumulations of slash. The logging meth- ods used on these sites produced large windrows of slash which makes it difficult to regenerate the area. Preparing the site by burning it not only inexpensive, it is also very effective The operation will be a joint effort between the Districts of Terrace Bay and Geraldton, with other Districts sending unit crews and observers to the area. Many hours have been spent on the prepara- tions needed to carry out an operation of this type. Visits to the area were made during the various stages of cutting by the Ministry staf- f who will be responsible for the operation. Aerial photographs were used and detailed maps were drawn up to aid in the planning and exe- cution of the burning operations. A weather station will be established in the area to pro- vide accurate details concerning local rainfall and temperature. This will enable the burning conditions to be closely observed, both prior to and during the operation. The personnel involved in the operations will establish a camp site near the area while carrying out the burning. By removing the large accumulations of log- ging debris, subsequent regeneration treat- ments, such as planting and seeding, will be possible, thus ensuring the establishment of a new crop of trees.
