MARTIN'S SCHOOL WALK-A-THON 1973 Although the day of the Walk-a-thon was cold and misty, I53 persons turned up to walk the twenty-mile route. Among these were the young- est registered walkers, Penny Luke and Lise Beaulieu, both Grade One pupils at St. Martin's Check points were set up at two-mile inter- vals between Terrace Bay and Schreiber, and a lunch of sandwiches, hot chocolate, freshie and cookies was served at Holy Angels' School in Schreiber to give spirit to the walkers at the half-way point. Of the I53 people who started, 99 completed the full twenty miles. The three most energet- ic walkers were Mike Fournier, John Bouchard and Rick Sitko who were the first three to com- plete the twenty miles. Congratulations and special thanks are ex- ' tended to Mrs. Lorraine Desaulniers who was sponsored for approximately $7.00 per mile. (she walked the full twenty miles and was the all-time top money-maker for the. four years that this Walk-a-thon has been held!) OVER THREE QUARTERS OF A MILLION DOLLARS FOR SUMMER JOBS IN ONTARIO Ontario's Minister of Community and Social Services, the Honour Rene Brunelle, together with the Honourable Margaret Birch, Minister without Portfolio, announced payment of spec- ial program grants totalling some $770,000.00 for Ontario's Youth in Action Program. Youth in Action is part of the Experience '73 special summer job program being co-ordin- ated by the Ontario Youth Secretariat under the direction of Mrs. Birch. Youth in Action is one of seventeen special projects in Ontar- io designed to provide employment for young people and at the same time enable communities to offer a needed service. The Ontario Youth in Action program will provide financial assistance to community pro- jects including recreation programs and pro- grams for the handicapped, operated by commun- ity agencies. The projects are approved by the Ministry of Community and Social Services' Sportg and Recreation Branch according to how they reflect the needs of a particular commun- ity. The expenses of each project are then cost shared by the agency and the Sports and Recreation Branch. In Terrace Bay the Summer Youth Program Development under the direction of the Terrace Bay Recreation Committee has been awarded $1,160.00. The Schreiber Environmental Aware- ness Program under the direction of the Schrei -ber Parks and Recreation Committee has been awarded $I,648.00 and in Marathon, Youth, Sports and Leisure Pursuits under the direct- ion of the Marathon Recreation Committee has been awarded $2,700.00.
