Chicago White Sox are going great guns in the American League's west division, while Chicago Cubs have a fairly strong lead in the National League east division. The last time there was such a "subway series", I think, was in 1951, when the New York Giants and New York Yankees squared off ..... Wilbur Wood, the White Sox's highly-rated 'junk' pitcher, is well on his way to setting the major leagues' most sought-after record of most wins in a season. Wood was I3-3 as of last Tuesday, which puts him ahead of former Detroit Tiger chucker Denny Mclain by one month. McLain, if you remember, posted 3I victories during the I968 season. The way Wood is going, those who know him say Wood could wind up with about 46 victories. He must be some kind of pitcher. Last Monday right, he pitched five innings to make the White Sox 6~3 winners that had to be called after I6 innings, then pitched almost flawless ball in another game for his I3th victory, a 4-0 Chicago triumph... Bobby Riggs, the 55-year-old tennis "hustler who made shambles of women's tennis by clobber -ing women's champ Margaret Court a few weeks ago, must have started something. Some old time boxer recently challenged any women to step were the superior race. Then, not long after, a 70-year-old ex-tennis whiz, challenged the No. 2 women's tennis player, Billie Jean Moff- att, to a match. Next thing you'll know, Joe Louis will issue a challenge to The Fabulous Moolah (world women's wrestling champ) for a no-holds-barred contest in Madison Square Garden. One comment that came out after Riggs beat Mrs. Court: "it proves that Riggs is the women's tennis player in the world." One thing about it, Riggs has been getting all kinds of publicity since his feat. He com- plained about not being allowed to enter some women's tennis tournament next month, since continued page 5 ...... of a Saturday night game ] into the ring with him and prove that men Clin tcl El A de
