Heron Bay and Marathon were beginning to boom and in order to provide services to the new communities a deputy headquarters was built in Marathon. It consisted of a tent manned by two rangers. More permanent housing was built in I943. Within the same year a second deputy headquarters and fire tower were built at Kil- lala Lake, undoubtedly one of the most beauti- ful bases in northern Ontario. It will long be remembered by those fortunate enough to have visited it. However, Marathon and Killala Lake became obsolete in terms of providing the necessary services and were closed down in the 60's. The only building standing today is the old log radio cabin at Killala Lake which serves as a patrol stopover. With the construction of pulp mills at Terrace Bay and Marathon, and the final road link between Nipigon and Sault Ste. Marie be- ing completed in I960, it soon became apparent that Pays Plat had outlived its usefulness in terms of efficiency and location. Terrace Bay, ideally situated as it is, was chosen as the site for a new headquarters. Construction of the$375,000 office-warehouse complex commenced in I968 and was completed the following year. Docking and refueling services were installed on Hayes Lake to accommodate both fixed wing and helicopter aircraft. The closing of the Pays Plat headquarters after 46 years of service climaxed a long, ex- citing and colourful era. All the buildings are gone now and within a few short years nat- ure will have taken her course and will have spread her canopy of foliage, swallowing up all evidence of past inhabitation. With the addition of the Manitouwadge Divis- ion into the Terrace Bay District, we eagerly look forward to the future. Reorganization within the Ministry geographically and in the form of new personalities and ideas will con- tribute much to the north shore area. Farewell lone track ranger, farewell lonely towerman and farewell to the many more too numerous to mention here who diligently pro- tected and conserved what we cherish and enjoy so much today. We have come a long way in the past fifty years, and as we take our first infant step into the future as a District, let us all aim high in our achievements in hope that the next fifty years will be as rewarding as the first.
